SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- A German shepherd fell out her owner's truck and stayed five weeks on the highway median near Sacramento for the owner to return.

Officers received calls every day about the animal, but they weren't able to find her for over a month.

Last Saturday, authorities were finally able catch the dog, who has since been nicknamed "Freeway Frida."

Understood. They are a high-octane breed, like a sports car. No can do. I am built for comfort, like a touring car. Two disparate identities, ill-suited for one another.

I can still stalk them on the internet. My opinionated and elderly cats would not abide the presence of a large dog in their home, at any rate. I must defer to their better judgment. Adopting any pet at odds with one’s basic personality traits is a disaster in the making. I may be blonde, but I am far from stupid. I am a country girl and have seen too many pets simply dumped, left to fend for themselves due to stupid former owners. Pets, especially dogs, love us unconditionally. Would that every owner return the favor.

Everything dumped and all wild things injured, seem to find their way to my yard.

It’s kinda weird.

There must be a sign at the end of the lane that only they can see.

o.O

[probably says “SUCKER, STRAIGHT AHEAD]

LOL

You, too? There must be a sign up in my yard or on my house that says “Free Room And Board” that only the furries or feathereds can see.

I just call mine my “BOYS AND GIRLS”; the two human ones are out on their own now, and don’t need constant care or attention.

There is a special place for you! I am on the board of the local humane society & some people are just unbelievable. People will come in & want to trade in their older dog for a puppy. Like you would do w/ a car! The young girls at the front desk talk about how times a day they want to leap over & absolutely pummel someone.

Unfortunately there are many like that. Some even here on FR that do place animals on a rung below humans that enable them to be traded and put down at the will of the owner regardless of the consequences. I had to give up my Papillions to my ex-wife when I moved and not a day goes by that I don't wish they were by my side.

I’ll bet your four legged kids are more honest and loyal than your two legged ones, (except when it comes to a hot dog or chocolate).

The more I think of it and the more people have been writing me about the BelMal, I’ll pass on it, get another Border Collie.

I do a lot of hiking and thought it a good companion on the trails but after people have written me about the BelMal I guess I’ll pass on it and get another Border Collie.

You had me going there for a minute——I thought that’s the strangest looking Belgian Malinois I’ve ever seen. Had no idea God made them in parti-color. LOL. Well, good luck, whatever you decide I’m sure it’ll be well loved.

Oh, I'm sure you do. I'm so sorry, I know the feeling well.

>>> I’ve never heard anyone say”I wish I’d never gotten a Border Collie.”

*raising hand*

I adopted one by mistake because at the time she was so scrawny as to be unrecognizable. Nothing against the breed except for being so hyper.

I found a private BC rescue to take her in. No way was I returning that dog to the awful shelter my county ran at the time.

I have a German Shepherd the someone dumped near the local animal control. He’s very quirky. It took about a year for him to trust me enough to eat something out of my hand without dissecting and examining it. He still goes berserk if he thinks he’s going to be restrained and needles send him into a panic.

He loves people, though. We hired a trainer to work with him to get him over the problems and she said he was one of the smartest dogs she had ever worked with. We’re guessing that he was an outdoor dog, but he housetrained right away.

He was originally a foster, but the rescue didn’t want the liability of adopting him out if he was going to attack someone for trying to hug him so I adopted him myself.

Since you like Border Collies, have you ever considered an Australian Shepherd? I’ve had three and believe they are a bit less hyper than the Borders and nearly as smart.

Neighbor up the road has an Aussie Sheppard and a BC mix. The Aussie’s seem a bit more hyper than my BC was. I guess I must be somewhat (dunno the correct term) wanting a duplicate of my last girl.

Your BC must have been rather sedate for a BC. My sister-in-law had two BCs and they were HYPER. I suppose within any breed that some individuals are more/less energetic than the norm. I have watched teams of BCs and Aussies play flyball at dog shows, and although both breeds have a reputation for energy, the difference in energy levels seemed quite apparent to me.

If you do get another BC, it may conform to type, but it will not be an exact duplicate of your girl. Every dog I have known had a unique personality, and of course they are all sorely missed when gone.
