How Scalia and Ted Cruz Saved the 2nd Amendment
AmericanThinker.com ^ | February 19, 2016 | Daniel John Sobieski

"Sen. Ted Cruz has warned that we are only one justice away from having the Second Amendment guaranteeing our right to keep and bear arms written out of the Constitution. (snip)

What few people know -- and the media won’t remind them -- is that Ted Cruz was a prime mover in getting Heller, in which Scalia wrote the majority opinion, before the Court and decided in favor of gun rights, ruling that the right to keep and bear arms was an individual right and that the word “militia”, as the Founders intended, meant the “whole people” of the United States. If Heller had gone the other way, our gun rights would have been thrown on the ash heap of history. In January Cruz told CNN: "I represented 31 states in the Heller case, which upheld the individual right to keep and bear arms. ....(snip)

Hillary Clinton, for example, has said she will put Supreme Court justices on the court who will overturn Heller. And if Heller is overturned… there were four justices who said that there is no individual right to keep and bear arms whatsoever, that it is only a collective right in the militia, which is fancy lawyer talk for a nonexistent right… [If] Hillary Clinton gets one more Supreme Court justice, what it would mean is, the Supreme Court would say you and I and every individual American have no constitutional right under the Second Amendment at all, and either the federal government or a state government could make it a crime to possess a firearm."

Trump used to be an active liberal, 15 years ago, but I haven't seen any of that since 2002.

And Ronald Reagan was a Democrat until late in life when as he put it, the "party left me".

Maybe they can make peace, but I don’t think Donald would make a good president. I trust Donald less than I did Romney when Romney changed his positions JUST BEFORE DECIDING TO RUN for POTUS.

“That only happens if (1) a republican succeeds him ..”

Cruz will be such a great president, I think that would happen.

However, I must admit, we never can underestimate the lack of wisdom of voters.

Thanks for posting that;I hadn’t seen it before.

Many Adult Children of Alcoholics have personality issues. Growing up in a warped and fundamentally unhealthy environment will do that to a person. Recall the time in the Senate when Cruz wanted to make a motion. Ninety-nine colleagues, and not one would second his motion. He survived a very challenging childhood, but he still has some healing to fo.

Trump is a crony capitalist, he has always said he donates to elected officials so that they will do his bidding.

Trumpsters aren’t conservative, they’re populist. Which means they stick their fingers in the winds to see which way the political winds are blowing and then vote accordingly.

They are more into personality and slogans than conserving and preserving. Substance isn’t one of their strong points.

We will not be told that Donald Trump was financially supporting all the forces arrayed against the Second Amendment while Ted Cruz was in the trenches winning your rights to bear arms.

And while Ted Cruz was fighting for our rights to keep and bear arms, Donald Trump was writing in book his support of "assault weapons" ban.
I generally oppose gun control, but I support the ban on assault weapons and I support a slightly longer waiting period to purchase a gun. - Donald Trump

Trump has always said he donates to elected officials so that they will do his bidding.

Trump was on a sucker list circulated around by conniving politicians-----pols knew he was a guy who would write out a check.

God only knows what these craven pols told Donald to get a bigger check.....details about their sex lives (or lack thereof0, oppo research about their opponents, dirt about other pols, inside Washington scandals maybe?

When I see Bill Clinton w/ Donald back then......it reminds me that Bill knew Donald had access to nubile, well-endowed, world-class beauties.....and maybe Bill got close to Donald to sample a few.

Donald knows plenty....and he's not talking....yet.

So we don’t vote for trump because he may not have known Joe wasn’t dead? Are you crazy? I am not sure that’s the case, but even if true, the positives of trump outweigh his knowledge of culture of college football. I am just great gum that trump begins his best month in 5 days. Trump has to work in Indiana some but once Cruz is unable to get 1237, most voters will leave Cruz like they have Kasick.

You may not buy it but it is true.

It has to do with his Son, Donald junior. Donald junior is a gun guy and he converted his dad.

I can provide the details if you like...but so far every time I have offered on this site no Cruz person has taken me up on it. It seems they prefer to continue to parrot the old line that Trump was anti gun in 2000..which he was, but between 2006 and 2009 was converted.

I would mention that Charlton Heston. Supported the GCA of 1968, an act which cause us gun folks no end of grief in the 1970s and early 1980s. Heston was a vocal supporter of Johnston’s GCA of 1968 and the follow up legislation that would have restricted handguns. He was that way well into the 1970s. Then he changed and before he shuffled off this mortal coil, did good service in the cause of firearms rights.

Converts are like that sometimes.

The fact is Trumps 2nd amendment stance is actually stronger than Ted Cruz as far as a offensive strategy. Trump wants to extend the equal protection act to the 2nd amendment. Very doable and the liberals themselves paved the way with the gay marriage crap. it would be nice to se them mashing their teeth when the same principle means no state can restrict they types of guns, magazines and out of state carry permits.

Cruz id a very strong abstract supporter of the 2nd amendment, but he proposes no such line of action. I am sure he would appoint good justices, but Trump is better on this issue at the moment, unless Cruz decides to copy him.

His wives-—a clarification.

Donald and No1 Ivana were happily married for years....but Marla got in the way. Ivana and Donald could still be married....but Ivana made a BIG mistake; she confronted Marla on the slopes of Aspen.

Of course, that threw Don and Marla together...fellow victims of that buttinsky Ivana.

Ivana should have known...if its sex, it only lasts two years....and that/s exactly how long Donald and No 2 Marla lasted. When Donald found out Marla was catting around w/ her bodyguard, the thrill was gone.....and she got dumped.

No 3 Melania came along way way after Marla got dumped. There was no hanky panky there on Donald’s part.

want to thank you for your efforts to restore civility and to call for an end to the name calling and vitriol on FR. those who engage in it do themselves, their candidate and FR no service. I wish there was more of an effort to moderate and tamp down on the more egregious examples of it.

Trump took until he was 64 to figure out that the 2nd amendment was a good thing, the same age he miraculously came to grips with the idea that abortion is bad?

Silly to place blind faith on to this sort of deathbed conversion, if it happened in his thirties or forties even that is one thing, not developing any sort of wisdom until you mid sixties indicates someone without core beliefs.

No Thanks.

I notice when folks are given information that disagrees with their preconceived notions...they ignore it.

Charlton Heston converted to pro gun between 1981 and 1986, he was hard to pin down on the exact time. That made him 58 to 63 when he went from anti-gun to pro gun.

Trump converted sometime between 2006 and 2009. Which made him 59 to 63.

Care to know the details of why Trump’s point of view changed.....all you have to do is ask.

Trump donated tens of thousands of dollars to essentially all New York politicians because he benefits from the business-government interactions in New York. He has to get permits and approvals, and those come more quickly when he can make a phone call to someone who wants to keep him happy. The world should not be that way, but Trump did not create those rules. “Pay to play” and he paid up.

____________________________________________

that’s just absolute BS..you would never accept that answer from anyone but Trump.

Cruz put the poison pill in the gang of 8 and he is still blamed for supporting the legislation. People on here dexpise/hate Cruz because he is working the political process like no one else. He’s part of the GOPe because a lawyer that used to work for McConnell is a lawyer for the PAC.

But Trump is the greatest ever because he is a crony capitalist. He the greatest ever because he is ignorant/inept of the rules. He’s the greatest ever because he conveniently changed his position in the last few years and still can’t articulate them.

The contortions of his followers is sickening. It’s like a 14 year old girl justifying her love for the 16 year old town thug. None of it makes sense.

If he had changed position on 1 issue you could have a point, he has vacillated on every issue, no core.
