Ronald Reagans favorable rating was also at 30% back in March 1980. The GOP elites at the time also worried he could never win.

If our ideas became fashionable and became the 'Establishment' - the same thuggy types would move to our side -- and they'd become problems all over again...
Laughable. Hilarious attempt to claim Trump’s negatives aren’t really so bad. They are, they are terrible. The difference here is Trump is no Reagan. Ronald Reagan was a true ideological conservative with a proven track record who actually believed in big things. Trump, on the other hand, is self promoting confidence man who says whatever he needs to at any moment in time to advance his personal agenda. Trump is no Reagan, not even in the same ballpark.
In 1976 and 1980 the GOPe (back then they were known as Rockefeller Republicans) utterly detested Ronald Reagan. Reagan came pretty close to winning the 1976 nomination and did win the 1980 nomination because a great number of the party’s “great unwashed” (as the GOPe likely thought of the Republican voter) told the GOPe to shove it.
I think the two key ideas of the American Revolution are: individual liberty is good, and LIMITED government is a preservative of individual liberty.
If the government is small, then the Establishment cannot be oppressive. Of course, the power hungry always want to expand government and accrue power — so the struggle is constant. But to the extent that our ideas are indeed fashionable, then the Establishment is kept in check (by definition). When our ideas become less mainstream, the Establishment grows.
There is endless oscillation. But I would say that since about 1913, the Establishment has grown steadily almost without opposition. Coolidge and Reagan were exceptions, but aside from those two, government just gets bigger and bigger: because our ideas are rarely fashionable.
I’m so sick of these Reagan, Trump comparisons.
There were only three channels in 1980. The media controlled every bit of information. They painted Reagan as a war mongering nut, and people believed it.
Then, the debate happened. I believe that it is still the most highly rated debate in history. Everyone got to see Reagan as a very reasonable alternative, and his numbers changed overnight.
Trumps problem is that everyone knows him all too well, and they don’t like him. That’s not going to change.
Reagan was a gentleman that had class. Trump is a classless bully.
No comparison.
the comparison is obscene.
Reagan wouldn’t stand a chance of being elected today. Unfortunately...
Even if Trump won over 50% of every state primary from here on out, he wouldn’t come close to Reagan’s 44 to 6 win over Bush
Trump is no Reagan. If Reagan were alive today he’d be the first to question why a liberal Democrat as Trump is was running as a Republican.
Reagan would look at the USA 25 years post NAFTA and open borders and he would vote for Trump.
“Demographically, the USA of 1980 no longer exists. White voters now make up a much smaller proportion of the electorate.”
Whites are still the largest voting block. The liberals’ sacred demographics of blacks and Mexicans are involved in a vicious racist war against each other. Thinking that the liberal pukes control our destiny is pure, unadulterated crap.
Thanks for your pearls of wisdom. Now back in the real world, Hispanics vote about 70 percent for Democrats, Blacks vote over 90 percent. Nixon and Reagan’s homestate California no longer elects Republicans to any statewide office.
“Hispanics vote about 70 percent for Democrats, Blacks vote over 90 percent.”
First, get your terms right. It’s NOT hispanics, it’s Mexicans. If you think that Mexicans and blacks vote for the same democrats, you’re not paying attention. You want to believe that Mexicans voted for Buckwheat, you’re full of beans.
Good post.
I met just such a man the other day. I asked him who he was leaning towards, and he said:
"Well... you're probably going to say I'm crazy, but I'm leaning towards Trump."
Once he knew I was on the Trump Train, it became clear that he wasn't merely leaning towards Trump, he was fully committed. But yes, he was embarrassed to admit it at first.
You don't seem to know very much. Mexican Americans voted overwhelmingly for Obama.
In 2012, Latinos supported Barack Obama over Mitt Romney by a margin of 71% to 27%
In California, Mr. Obama took the states 55 electoral votes with 72 percent, [In CA, Hispanics are predominantly of Mexican origin]. Same for New Mexico. Same for the Texas counties that went for Obama.
