You may have noticed that things are starting to get crazy. Financial markets are imploding, violent crime rates are soaring in our major cities, and we have witnessed a truly unusual series of natural disasters in recent months. War in the Middle East continues to rage out of control, and Islamic terror continues to spread all over the globe. And many believe that 2016 is going to be a year of political shaking, civil unrest, governmental crackdowns and great economic chaos in the United States. All it is going to take to plunge our society into full-blown panic mode is a major "trigger event" of some sort. Another 9/11, a new “Lehman Brothers” moment, a massive EMP burst from the sun or a historic seismic event are all examples of what this "trigger event" could look like.

So are you ready for what is about to happen to America? In previous articles, I have urged my readers to focus on the five basics – food, water, shelter, energy and self-defense. If you focus on those five things, you will probably be in pretty good shape during any major disaster or emergency.

In this article, I want to dig a little deeper and give people some more specific tips regarding what they can do to prepare for the times that we are now entering. The following are 70 tips that will help you survive what is going to happen to America…

I agree with that recommendation. I would add the ability to grow food (raised beds) to extend food storage.

I am concerned that people always fight the last wars. What if tomorrow the lights go out? What if they don't come back on for a week, month or year?

Our entire modern existence including very long supply chains depend on electricity (Connections - Technology Trap). Our banking system, fuel, food, security, communications and medicine all require electricity. Without electricity our modern existence is over. If the lights go out, what will happen within three days?

I see that as an ongoing preparation step. Start out with a week, a month and then a year. Even a week is longer than most of our society is prepared for. Just look at Sandy. It was hours.

I would then take it a step further. Prepare to be unnoticed during those steps. Buy food that only requires rehydration for the first couple of months. Hungry people can smell cooked food from miles away.

Prepare to use that food if nothing happens. I use the example of paper products. When Obama (pieces be unto him) took over I knew our currency would be destroyed. I went out and bought a large purchase of paper products. Within a year, I had a better ROW than any of my investments. The prices doubled. I will use all of those stocks as I replace them.

Finally, raised beds and storage of heirloom seeds (be sure to practice growing and food storage) will supplement those stored food stocks.

Yes. I agree with the recommendation in that I want to lay low. The grey man is the best route. Do not draw attention to yourself or family, and do not be in need.

Your basic plan is Not for as long a time as I believe I will have to take care of myself...

How long do you expect that we would need to deal with harmful government interference during a SHTF situation? How long for a significant rate of looters/predators? How long before we reach a more or less civilized equilibrium similar to the 1800s, the 1600s, or whatever level we fall to?

I consider trade and the rule of law essential, and I believe trade will restart as soon as the population stabilizes after a SHTF event. I can grow far more corn than I can eat - as soon as things are stable enough that no one will burn my crops or try to eat the immature ears.

Upon my retirement, I moved everything out of the direct stock market and settled for a guaranteed minimum with options for more growth if the market does well.

Market crashes and I don't lose a cent. Market goes up and I earn more.

Couldn't handle a third sell off and maintain viability into the later years.

As for shoes, it’s on the list but WAY down in the 40s.

100 mile footwear and good socks are an essential part of the bug out bag.

Try walking 5 miles in those cute pumps. Or if it is raining wet work out sneakers- that were comfy a moment ago- will ruin your feet in half a mile.

I don’t disagree with you for the most part, but the article recommends “several” years of food per person. I think that, while I would love to have the peace of mind of having several years of food on hand, it is highly ambitious and slightly unreasonable to store that amount of food. As it stands now we could do a lean year.

Spirits never go bad. Fermentation is easy to learn, we currently do several hundred gallons a year of hard cider.
