Vanity - What is Your Favorite Inspirational Song?
Vanity | 21 Nov 2015

When things begin to get you down or the world overwhelms, it usually helps to listen to music that inspires you. A song I've recently found very inspirational, among many - even though I don't understand the words - is a song from the sound track of the documentary Patterns of Evidence

Freedom: The Dawn Of Exodus

Most inspirational when belting it out where everyone knows, and sings, parts: “Wonderful Grace of Jesus”. Gives me chills.

Most inspirational to sing if in a good chorus, or just to listen to: “Battle Hymn of the Republic” Mormon Tabernacle Choir arrangement.

Most inspirational re theology: “My Faith Has Found A Resting Place” and “A Mighty Fortress”.

"I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day" is my favorite Christmas song, but only if all seven verses are sung and if it is sung to the tune "Waltham" by John B. Calkin.

Unfortunately, when the song is performed, the fourth and fifth verses are usually left out, which greatly reduces the song's effectiveness. The verses are as follows:

Then from each black, accursed mouth
The cannon thundered in the South,
And with the sound the carols drowned
Of peace on earth, good will to men.

It was as if an earthquake rent
The hearth-stones of a continent,
And made forlorn, the households born
Of peace on earth, good will to men.

If these verses are not sung, the listener is left wondering why the song's mood changes so abruptly as the singer begins the next verse, "And in despair, I bowed my head."

Although the words have been set to several tunes, "Waltham" is by far the best.

I prefer to hear "How Great Thou Art" in the original Swedish, in which it is entitled "O Store Gud" (oh mighty God). One of my favorite performances is by Artur Erickson, available here.

solidarity with the evil attack of France, take your pick:
  1. The Partisan. 1969
  2. The Partisan. 1988
  3. The Partisan. 2012

Oh, the wind, the wind is blowing,
through the graves the wind is blowing,
freedom soon will come;
then we'll come from the shadows.

With the Western world threatened by Bolshevism, pestilence, and political and economic turmoil, the times were far from good as Christmas approached in 1918. Nonetheless, it was at that time that Amanda Kennedy wrote Star of the East, an inspiring tune especially for those going through hard times.
