Walmart's stock took a steep drop as the company announced that it was expecting lower profits. There are a number of problems Wal-mart has, such as its website and fulfillment not being quite as good as Amazon.com, but Wal-mart is primarily a brick and mortar store, not an internet company.
The basic problem as I see it is that middle class people are afraid to shop there. If you look at reviews on Yelp one of the most common words used to describe Wal-mart is "ghetto". There is even a Yahoo question on this very topic:
Why is every Walmart so ghetto? Why? I have never walked into any Walmart without feeling like I was going to be mugged, even in a nice area. I know the prices are very convenient, but still. I don't see why every Walmart attracts gangs, druggies, and sometimes even hookers. I've actually seen all those things at a Walmart before, including a man wearing a thong....

Because Tar- Jay is the middle class Walmart?
Because the merchandise is ugly, shoddy crap.
I prefer Meijer stores.
I will be checking back into this thread again later, it should be interesting.
I shop at Walmart all the time. Our area doesn’t have the wonderful diversity and vibrancy that some do thank God. I got enough of fat-a**, loud-mouth, baby factories in Nashville.
... because this isn’t Sam Walton’s Walmart anymore???
My Walmart is not in a ghetto. Quite the opposite. I’ve been to a friend’s Walmart in NC and that wasn’t in a ghetto either. I use it occasionally. Maybe it’s the crowds that deter me and the checkout is slow.
I've shopped there, but have you seen the clientel? Take a look at http://www.peopleofwalmart.com/
I’m always just a little worried that someone will go postal when I’m there.
I admit that I don’t go into Wal-Mart frequently, but when I have I don’t think that the shopping experience has been any better or any worse than shopping at a Kohl’s or a supermarket.

Bingo!
The “new” Wal-Mart fully embraces the lavender nazi agenda.
There are 2 Walmarts where I shop. One is 2 miles further but I like shopping there. The closer one has someone who marks your receipt after counting your items as you leave. I only shop at this one if I can’t get to the other, and sometimes I just say, “screw it”, and I don’t go there at all.
I know middle class people who shop for groceries at walmart.
The students I know shop for clothes at walmart. They know its cheap & won’t last but its what they can afford
the middle class shops at the dollar stores...
I disagree. I know a lot of middle income folks that shop at Walmart.
Perfect for Christmas gifts.
I’m [Initiate Marxist Mode] Upper-Middle-Class [/Marxist] and show at Wally-World regularly.
Oy vey!
I wonder who they vote for :-)
There are plenty of WalMarts where the shopping is worry free. In my small home town, I shop there all the time. Nice normal middle class people - there some poor ones, but they are well-behaved and don’t dress some of the EBTers you would imagine. Also a lot of other Walmarts around Metro Atlanta are okay.
The ones I won’t shop at are in Marietta, Georgia on Highway 140 and any one of them in Atlanta city limits. Basically, I don’t shop at a Walmart that is on or near a bus line, rail line or within walking distance of a Section 8 housing ghetto.
