So if the kid hung himself you’d say the same thing about rope?

Valid, thought-provoking point. The pain inflicted on so many by that one act
in a 6th grade classroom is incalculable, and will resonate life-long.

It is a tragedy but guns are not even close to the most dangerous thing to children. By stressing every accidental or even suicide by guns, the public is fooled into thinking that something is true which is not.

I do think parents are responsible for teaching safe handling of guns and when not to handle them too. My Father always had guns in the house and none of his 5 children would even have dreamed of handling one without permission.

Gun safety is basically the same as wearing helmets for biking and skiing. 20 years ago only racers had helmets and everybody had glass front gun cabinets. I suppose you could force people under threat of law to take safety precautions, but seat belts in cars have been the law for 20 years and state troopers will be the first to tell you that the bodies they pickup off the road weren't belted in their car.

Gun safety starts with respect and should include safe storage. That glass front gun cabinet will make a nice china hutch.

The first suicide I ever knew happened in the 7th grade. A girl in my class shot herself with her dad's revolver.

It was 1981.

People have been shooting themselves with guns for as long as guns have been around.

It's easier for a kid to pull a trigger than hang themself.

I'm a gun owner and a supporter of the 2nd Amendment, but with great power comes great responsibility. When my wife said she wanted a gun in the house so she'd feel secure when I'm out of town, I said, "sure. But only if you go to a pistol range and take some lessons."

Rope has no connection to the 2nd Am; irresponsible gun
ownership does indeed jeopardize the 2nd Am. Surely that
point is self-evident?

The right to own rope isn't in the U.S. Constitution, the right to keep and bear arms is.

Get it?

A kid in my daughters sixth grade class overdosed last night. I support the pharmacuticals 100% but I have serious concerns whether we live in a society anymore where the average citizen is capable of responsible prescription drugsownership. If prescription drugsowners keep their heads in the sand and continue to have prescription drugs in their residences, where kids or kids taking any medication coexist then the prescription drugs is gone within twenty years. The founders could have never envisioned that there could be a distinction between prescription drugs ownership and responsible prescription drugs ownership. Yet today distinction is glaring. The thousands of cuts will end the prescription drugs unless prescription drugs owners get in front of this issue.

Shall I continue?

people have been offing themselves since the beginning of time, if it wasn’t a gun it would be something else.

So do you also have “serious concerns” about easy access to cars, computers, rope, sharp instruments, acetaminophen, and other things people have used tonkill themselves or used to drive others to kill themselves?

Mentally ill people have always been in danger of harming themselves be it by gun, knife, hanging, pills, poison, jumping off a bridge, lying on the train tracks etc. This isn’t anything new.

If we used that type of logic we would have to ban not only guns but knives, rope, medications including aspirin, bridges and trains. Would that make any sense?

Taking away our Constitutional rights isn’t going to do anything to fix that. Someone intent on harming themselves or others will find a way.

There are probably half a dozen other reasons that could point to someone causing harm to themselves or others. Taking away the right to defend ourselves isn’t going to do a dang thing except to make more targets available. It’s an emotional reaction designed to make people feel better and our government to gain complete control over us.

Does irresponsible car ownership jeopardize car ownership?

“The founders could have never envisioned that there could be a distinction between gun ownership and responsible gun ownership. Yet today distinction is glaring.”

Nonsense. The Founders understood human nature, which is why they attempted to limit gov’t power. People will always do stupid or cruel things. There will never be an end of it. But it is no reason to limit EVERYONE ELSE’S God-given rights.

It was a terrible thing to have happen, & as one who has suffered from depression, I’ve dealt with my own suicidal thoughts. What stopped me was knowing the pain it would inflict on those around me. I wish this kid had considered others before acting. Prayers for his family.

I have a friend whose little nephew drowned in a bucket last July. More kids drown in buckets than die from guns.

Sounds like the problem wasn't the tool, but something that bothered the kid. You really have to watch out for your kids, especially when someone can be seemingly irretrievably humiliated in one mouse click on Facebook or the like.

It's damned tough being a kid, and probably harder now than it was in my day when you could at least walk up to the bullies and punch the SOB in the face (even knowing you were likely to not only get your butt kicked, but get into trouble, too).

Now, a kid is supposed to take it, and that just encourages more.

So the kid has a meltdown.

You can blame the gun, but they can find a truck to step in front of, hang themselves, or get into someone's meds just as easy.

Every parent should make sure they tell their kid (and then back it up by living it) "If you ever have a problem, no matter how bad it seems, come tell me. Work with me on it. I love you, and even if you get into trouble, trouble only lasts so long. The trimmings may have changed, but the basic problems haven't. "
