Full disclosure: As goes election 2016, I’m decidedly not in the Donald Trump camp. To compare Trump to Ronald Reagan, as some have done, is like comparing a Hostess Ding Dong to a seven course meal at Osteria Francescana. Though each may please the palate, the latter offers both substance and sustenance, while the former offers a quick endorphin fix and empty calories.
Trump is no conservative. He’s a big-government, tax-and-spend liberal who has spent most his life supporting Democrats and Democratic causes. Mr. Trump’s moral compass lacks due north. Its needle spins faster than Hillary Clinton on a Tilt-A-Whirl. Donald Trump believes what Donald Trump believes because he’s Donald Trump – not because what he believes has any basis in fact.
Like many liberals, the Donald is prone to engage in the ad hominem attack when pushed into a corner on questions of substance (e.g., a propensity to mock the physical appearance of his detractors). Such personal insults are shallow, juvenile and, rather than representing a challenge to the dictates of political correctness, show a boorish lack of civility and decorum.
Still, don’t get me wrong. In some ways, and like millions of Americans, I find Trump both endearing and entertaining. I believe his conventional-wisdom-defying rise in the polls can be attributed, primarily, to three things:
First, he’s anti-establishment. The conservative base of the Republican Party is sick of the GOP leadership’s empty campaign promises, gutless lack of resolve and failure to use all means at their disposal to rein-in Obama’s lawlessness and hold him accountable. Bringing John Boehner and Mitch McConnell into political combat is like bringing a wet noodle to a sword fight.

I was around in 1979 and Reagan was not the Reagan we revere today - at least the one the media trots out as so much better than Mr. Trump. In 79, he was a dumb cowboy and the star of Bedtime for Bonzo who couldn’t put a verbal sentence together much less avoid tripping over the nuclear button.
Also, I was around in NYC in the 70s and 80s and 90s and Trump’s persona was hardly some wild-eyed left-wing nutcase. He was vehemently opposed to crime - particularly crime against women - and spoke out about it every time some horror story struck. And in those years, it was often! He didn’t like bureaucratic red tape and in one famous example, cut through it like a hot knife through butter. He was and is a hard-headed businessman - hardly an Occupy Wall Street type. That he supported Democrats is not surprising - try finding a conservative or a Republican to support in all those years in NYC and NY State. Almost impossible and the few they ran, were LOSERS!!! to quote the Donald. I’m still trying to think of the guy I worked for who ran for governor - Renfree or something - and what a disaster that was!
Do you like Rubio and Jeb’s immigration compasses better?
See Carly or Ben or Chris as more conservative?
Maybe think that Pataki or Bobby or Rick is more electable?

I like the “business man” who isn’t a maturity snob.
The nice think about Trump is he attacks like a New Yorker but with the truth.
The truth is getting past the press and politicians to voters.
IMO though Washington elites don’t like it, the casual voters should IMO be VERY GRATEFUL for Donald Trump whether he eventually drops out, loses in the final contest or wins the Presidency.
Trump gets attention and possesses a spine.
Cruz has a spine but needs to get known more to be effective.
If Cruz is not the guy and Trump gets in I hope Cruz and Trump are a ticket.

I am for Cruz.
Cruz is my #2, so I didn’t want to bring up the electability question for him—but I think it is a real issue at this point.
Too intense, especially given his conservative purity, for the general election. Most likely to get to the presidency through being Trump’s VP first.
But if Trump falters or otherwise disappoints, I’ll be back to Cruz being my man as well.
I am for Cruz, but if he doesn't make it, I think Rubio might be the best bet overall, in terms of a balance of conservatism, competence, and electability. You'll bring up the immigration issue, but let's see if he can shore up that position satisfactorily. In other respects, I think he's got a lot going for him.
Ugh—Rubio looks, sounds, and speaks like a junior in college. Along with his hideous immigration allegiance and position, he has a very poor tax plan. I wouldn’t at all trust his “shoring up his position” on it at this point.
Trump could well blow it, but he hasn’t yet. He actually polls better with independents and moderates and minorities than the usual “electable” warm mush the GOPe tries to sell us.
