Didn’t the Japanese try something like this at the end of the war—half battleship-Half carrier. Didn’t work out to well if I recall. We need more big gun ships—heavy cruisers maybe? Maybe rail guns will change things. Light and fast drone carriers (like Jeep carriers of old). Maybe a new form of Monitor with Rail guns?
begs the question what enemy are we going up against?

Spent a few hours one night listening to the New Jersey firing over our heads. You could not sleep through that insane sound.
The USS Missouri museum has a beautiful plastic see-through model of a turret and below deck areas. Could have spent an hour examining it.
PPS Prior to the development of GPS technology, shooting over the horizon would be problematical without a spotter. The ballistic tables for the German Paris gun included corrections for the Earth’s rotation while the shell was in flight!
The crafty Germans also made allowance for bore wear and enlargement after each shot.
