Rocker Ted Nugent says he supports an American dentist who killed a protected lion in Zimbabwe.

In an interview with the Rita Cosby Show on WABC radio in New York, Nugent railed against people who are upset about the killing, saying the outrage is because the lion was given a name, Cecil. He said getting upset about Cecil but not other lions "is disingenuous and tragically dishonest."

Personally i don’t think we should be killing things like Lions and Tigers and Bears (oh my), unless we have to kill them in order to protect people from getting eaten by some of them.

As Top level predators ourselves consider I think we should consider it a “professional courtesy”.

We also shouldn’t kill some animals that exhibit human like traits in intelligence like great apes, elephants, whales, etc... And certain animals we have domesticated like kitty cats and puppy dogs either

That being said I I am not gonna lose any sleep over a safari hunter like the jerk dentist (luring the animal out of the reserve was a “jerkass homer” move) , I just think he is a jerk.

No law against being a jerk.

And there should never be, ever a law against being a jerk.

If the dentist relocates to my area, my family will switch to using him.

What if I throw your troll ass into a lion’s cage? Would you bet your life that the lion will give you “professional courtesy”?

True enough. I don't care if people choose to hunt non-endangered animals, though hunting isn't my thing. But lions could go extinct in the wild by 2050 if current trends hold. I don't care if the government of Zimbabwe or other dysfunctional Third World kleptocracies allows hunters to kill rare animals - a responsible person would refrain.

I wonder what the reaction would have been if this story ran instead?

I did not know extinction was a possibility. Great news. Thanks for sharing.

If they no longer allow the hunting of big game like lions and big cats, they will become extinct even faster. The big game are worth a great deal of money and are protected in order to be hunted. The governments have a vested interest to protect them. So do the local populous. When that incentive is removed, the animals become a nuisance and are quickly killed by the locals.

It is simply a fact that hunters are particularly interested in the propagation of large game so that their will be sufficient numbers to continue to hunt.

No. Because the lion is a savage predator it would soonrr eat me like a gazelle. I am not a tofu eating moron. i did grow up on a farm. Hunting prey animals is fine in my opinion as is hunting vermin animals and predators that eat livestock.

I just don’t think it was ethical to lure a lion out of a preserve in order to fulfill the dr. Livingston fantasy of some schmuck. If it was a lion the guy killed in the wild in a hunting area i would be perfectly fine with it. If his “guides” screwed up punish them and not this denist guy. I defended the one teenage gal that took media hell for killing animals in africa a year ago on this very site.

We as himans sould and are better than that. I personally just dont think we should be killing top level predators like lions and tigers and eagles if it can be avoided. Note that i said IF IT CAN BE AVOIDED. Just because i would personally kill a lion for sport doesn’t mean i would want you from doing so.

As for callling me a troll that is most disrespectful and if you knew me you would be ashamed for calling a down to earth country gal something disrespectful like me that.

I agree with the hunt to preserve paradigm but this animal’s hunt was “dubious” as it was a tracked animal that was lured. I an fine with others hunting them as long as it is legitimate and does indeed help preserve the species. I just wont be shooting them myself as i hold a personal opinion about not wanting to kill another top predator.

I would imagine that the threat of extinction for most animals is not the fairly rare legal hunter (rich white guy that can afford the huge fees), but is poaching and probably more so habitat destruction due to increasing population and/or expansion of civilization.

In a lot of places the legal hunts pay for the game wardens that protect the animals from poachers. Legal hunts also promote the landowners management of their land for the animal (in order to make money off the hunts).:

http://conservationmagazine.org/2014/01/can-trophy-hunting-reconciled-conservation/

“Leader-Williams describes how the legalization of white rhinoceros hunting in South Africa motivated private landowners to reintroduce the species onto their lands. As a result, the country saw an increase in white rhinos from fewer than one hundred individuals to more than 11,000, even while a limited number were killed as trophies.”

Agree.

If the guy’s guides did it and lied to the dentist. Punish the guides only. If the dentist was a knowing participant then punish him with the guides.

This is akin to someone “baiting” deer here in the usa. Im not a deer hunter but i think it carries a serious fine.

I grew up on farm so we always had a love/hate relationship with hunters. Some were awesome decent folk who always asked politely to hunt and repected our cattle and property, some acted like self important entitled jerks who demanded to hunt and did crap like leaving gates open and scaring / endabgering our cows. Guess who we told to pound sand. Eventually my parents only let certain close friends and family hunt.... too many moron jerkasses ruined it for everyone.

My brothers hunted coyotes and raccoons. Two animals the world could do with less of.
