Seriously, with the nations political correctness they wouldn’t even make it a tenth of the way there before blowing up. The solid three legged stool of a draftsman, designer, and engineer developing hardware of the 40’s through the 90’s was destroyed long ago. Now the powers- that-be think some rookie engineer can do all three functions and play with his GD cell phone at the same time.
I was thoroughly disgusted with what passed for engineering at the last of my career and I was an Air Force/NASA designer.

The Gen-Y and Millennial demographic probably would care less about human space exploration and Americans arriving on another planet than they would about keeping up with each other on social media.
It may have worked 50 years ago but today it would be a disaster. Immediately the identity politics crowd would complain that the make-up of the crew was not diverse enough. Why aren’t there any transgendered 1 legged eskimos or muslim women? Are they all getting the same pay? The occupy crowd would scream about the Invasion of Mars by evil humans for corporate profits. Environmentalists would protest against introducing new and dangerous species to Mars and the resulting genocide against any native Martian species that would result, not to mention the pollution, waste, garbage and toxic pollutants left on the formerly “pristine” planet. The left would scream about the hegemonic plans of the US to claim ownership of Mars and use it as a platform for aggression against the other peaceful planets of the solar system. Finally the mission would be destined for failure because unlike the moon mission that used only qualified personnel, the design, engineering and planning team would be a selected based on race and gender and political affiliation. This would insure that the lander would impact the surface at 1 mile per second instead of 1 foot/sec, because someone didn’t convert the units properly.
Just reading the title of this article proves the fact that common sense and the ability to rationalize is totally dead in America.
