The move is aimed at replacing a defect in the airbags' inflators that can cause them to deploy with explosive force, sending metal shrapnel hurtling toward drivers and passengers.

The typical human response to pyrotechnics is to run away after lighting. The whole concept of “air” bags is questionable.

I received a recall notice last year from 2006 Honda to replace my airbag inflator device for this very reason. When I forgot about it they sent me a second notice this year with all the dangers printed in red ink and where to go to have it replaced. I very impressed with the people at Honda. It took less than an hour to fix.

My current vehicle had airbags deployed after a fender-bender that smashed a headlight. (Which is right where the airbag sensor is..) And I’m happy to not have them anymore, though the bent hood/quarter-panel is annoying.

When I get my next vehicle, I am seriously considering removing the airbags, depending on how difficult it is.
