The move is aimed at replacing a defect in the airbags' inflators that can cause them to deploy with explosive force, sending metal shrapnel hurtling toward drivers and passengers.

The typical human response to pyrotechnics is to run away after lighting. The whole concept of “air” bags is questionable.

My current vehicle had airbags deployed after a fender-bender that smashed a headlight. (Which is right where the airbag sensor is..) And I’m happy to not have them anymore, though the bent hood/quarter-panel is annoying.

When I get my next vehicle, I am seriously considering removing the airbags, depending on how difficult it is.
