Michelle Obama: Museums Intimidate Minorities

Speaking at the opening of the Whitney Museum in New York City, Michelle Obama implied that museums intimidate people who "look like" her, as well as "young people." The Whitney Museum is a museum of American art.

Ms. Obama began her speech by saying how beautiful the new museum was and by thanking Mayor de Blasio. "I also want to recognize Mayor de Blasio for his leadership and his passion, and for joining us here today -- absolutely," she said.

The First Lady then mentioned one of the themes that one of the museum's exhibits has, which is, “How can we truly, fully witness the melting pot of cultures and sensibilities and struggles that make America unlike any other country on earth?”

"This is a bold, very hard question," Ms. Obama said.

She continued that it was difficult for her and people who "look like" her to visit cultural centers because minorities are intimidated by them.

The First Lady explained, "There are so many kids in this country who look at places like museums and concert halls and other cultural centers and they think to themselves, well, that’s not a place for me, for someone who looks like me, for someone who comes from my neighborhood."

She continued, "In fact, I guarantee you that right now, there are kids living less than a mile from here who would never in a million years dream that they would be welcome in this museum. And growing up on the South Side of Chicago, I was one of those kids myself. So I know that feeling of not belonging in a place like this."

The Perpetual Martyr. I would love to find that one kid who lives within a mile of the Whitney who thinks s/he doesn’t belong there. One kid who lives within a mile of the Whitney whose family is not quite wealthy compared to the rest of the country. That area (by zip) is mostly young, fairly affluent whites, sorry to say, Michelle. The type who voted for your husband. You’d HATE living there!

..."she would be a better influence if she sponsored field trips ".... Unfortunately anything she does with children she is always the central figure....rather than enjoy their games and they entertaining her....she "plays" and the focus remains on her rather than the children. She is all about herself....while they watch her steal their show.

Like most accusations of covert racism in recent times. My evidence is based on a iron clad feelings concerning Caucasian people. IOW Whitey is interjecting racism in everything!

Was she there as a guest or part of display.

God forbid that minorities might learn something if they stepped into a museum. Wouldn’t want that, would they?
