The U.S. is seeing a growing number of preppers or survivalists who prepare to live for months at a time in the event of a disaster. CCTV Americas Sean Callebs reported this story from Atlanta.

There are those who believe you have to be prepared now, because the end will come in a flash. A pandemic flue nearly 100 years ago, for example, killed as much as five percent of the global population.
Preppers say theyre ready to survive in the worst scenaro.
I had a friend who described it very well as theres those who prep because they know they need to and theres those who prep because its a hobby. With me its a hobby, James Knight, a decorated military vet, aircraft mechanic, and self-identified prepper said.
Rice, and other grains are frozen vacuum sealed with oxygen to preserve it.
Catering to preppers or survivalists is big business that generated at least $600 million a year. There are even prepper conventions.
If it says survivalist on it, people want to buy it.
Some items are cheap while others are expensive. For example one can spend up to $290,000 for a 2,800-square-foot concrete-and-steel-reinforced underground home.
Our structures have ten foot ceilings and 12 foot ceilings. We have all the amenities and the custom finishes of your traditional home. The only difference is we dont have windows, Bobby McLennan, founding partner of Safe Home Structures said.
Sounds cute, but is a dangerous mind-set.
Think about it: most people who "prep" also have deadly-force means to protect it.
Those who don't prep will have nothing to take when the SHTF anyway....
Today’s prepper movement hearkens back to the fallout shelter boom of the late fifties where most who participated would brick up a corner of their basement & stock it with cots & supplies.
You people are all so darn serious. sheesh
Most of us will not have the luxury 2800 sq. foot shelter. There might be a radio station to listen to but Ham radio would probably be all the entertainment to listen to. Underground would be about 55 degrees so things would be cold. Internet would be out which will distress many. Travel may be impossible. No matter what happens you have problems.
Uhm, you don't get on a plane, call allah ackbar, then piss about how "serious" everybody is.
I know - but that's some dark humor there, and there are probably quite a few who really do think that way.
It would really suck having to shoot some dude that's trying to feed his family because he didn't prepare.
Then I'd have to drag him aways to bury him - it would be unsanitary to leave him be....
My area is has had floods and fires. I suppose we need to plan on what is most likely to happen to us but be prepared for anything also. Unintended consequences will be a killer.
Ping.
Whine much?
Most of us won’t have an underground shelter at all.
now is the time for everybody to make the choices they will live or die with later
50 % of bullet prepers will be dead or wounded the first night. The idea that they dont need to prep food because they can just steal it is beyond foolish, it is simply evil.
If you are serious about prepping, I highly recomend reading “Surviving off off grid” by Michael Bunker. Being prepared is not just a bag of beans or bullets.
When TSHTF, guns and ammo will be lying all over the streets.
Good people recoil at that dark humor, because in some dark humor, they know the person is revealing his inner thoughts.
sheana, is your husband an involved prepper?
zzzzzz........and BTW, preppers ARE creating jobs......it’s a multi million dollar industry.....what part of that do you not see relating to jobs???? Multi million dollar industries NEED WORKERS.
I don’t know how many are mentally prepared, but if you are physically prepared, you have a better shot at handling the mental part. 100% of the non prepped will handle any need mentally well. (no, I’m not prepped enough, not nearly enough...) even for something like a bad ice storm or hurricane.
There are some very likely and very practical reasons to prep short of armegeddon or revolution......even if that’s what drives much of the movement.
...I had typo....what I meant to say is that 100% of those who are NOT physically prepared - for whatever the deal is - will fail the mental prep test. At least some of those physically prepared will handle the mental.
Some real hard liners are actually hoping for it.
I’m in a similar position with MREs; I have some that are probably 20 years old, and have to rotate them. I guess I’ll be eating them while hiking this spring; I have newer ones from Hurricane Sandy (when the National Guard flooded the area with them).
I live near the Meadowland Flea Market by Giants Stadium here in NJ; every Saturday you can watch idled American workers sell their tools to their Hispanic replacements...
