SIERRA VISTA — An unexploded 60 mm mortar dating back to the World War II era recently uncovered during a prescribed burn on Fort Huachuca is set to be disposed of this morning.

Discovered on the post’s Range 11, the mortar is scheduled to be detonated some time after 9:30 a.m. by members of the Davis-Monthan Air Force Base’s ordinance disposal team, said Tanja Linton, media relations officer for Fort Huachuca.

If any fort personnel or visitors ever come upon any unexploded ordnance, they are asked to avoid the item, note its location, and contact Range Control at 533-7311 or the Military Police desk at 533-3000.

I think all old ordinances should be detonated.

Not ordnance, though. It might be useful someday.

Exploding an ordinance regarding ordnance may trigger dangerous secondary regulations.

I wonder what the next scene would look like.

Pretty messy, I assume.

Old ordinance to be detonated this morning

Watch as the explosive ordinance disposal team carefully carries the dangerously unstable internal revenue code away for destruction.

Apparently this sort of thing happens occasionally. An old 81mm round that was found last December and reported to fort personnel.

Then there was the 60mm HE round found by a hiker on New Years Day 2013. The hiker thoughtfully put the unexploded round in his backpack and took it to the Sierra Vista PD - whom I'm sure were very grateful to have it in their station.

(This could also explain why we loose the occasional hiker under mysterious circumstances.) :-)

Circa 1967 in the Boy Scouts, we camped at the Quantico Marine Base. A buddy and I wandered onto a range and brought back what was said to be a live bazooka round. Fun and games.

Fast forward many years - my son and buddies blowing up a 122mm shell in Iraq. The audio is funny.

-—great-—( the propellant must have been even faster burning than Bullseye)—or I wonder if that was something rigged to do that, similar to the instant detonating grenades , reputedly distributed by the Russians to “take care “ of a problem individual-—
