Crispy Critters — Nevada Solar Plant Not For The Birds
investor's Business Daily ^ | February 25, 2015 | IBD EDITORIALS

A solar-power project set to open next month in Nevada has fried 130 birds during tests and will soon join another solar farm in California in avian incineration.

If as many birds being burned by solar power farms built in the U.S. were to wash up on our beaches soaked in crude oil from a leaking offshore well, the outrage would be deafening.

But as with the wind turbines that now cover acre upon acre of former "pristine" countryside, what amount to avian Cuisinarts slicing and dicing everything that flies, including endangered species, only the crickets are chirping.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi is a big fan of green energy. So is her brother-in-law Ronald Pelosi. He was a senior executive with a company called Pacific Corporate Group (PCG). Among PCG's investments is SolarReserve, based in Santa Monica, Calif., which received a $737 million loan guarantee to build a 110-megawatt solar-thermal plant near Tonopah in Senate Minority Leader Sen. Harry Reid's Nevada.

Oh how cozy, Pelousie is a proud member of a ‘green’ family.

Politicians can’t get rich from bribes to allow soaking beaches with oil. But they can get rich with bribes to construct solar systems with money stolen by taxes , so there never will be an outcry will there.

This is happening at every solar generating facility in the western deserts which use this particular technology in which thousands of solar panel mirrors capture the sun’s heat energy and aim it at huge elevated water tanks where the heat turns the water into steam to drive generating turbines.

Here in California, these solar generating farms are located in areas of bird migration. The birds mistake the mirrors for lakes. As they fly into the mirrored areas, the heat burns their feathers off.

The developers had to know this would happen. There is no solution. It is similar to what is happening with the wind turbines such as the hundreds of them located in the San Gorgonio Pass which leads into the Coachella Valley (Palm Springs area). Birds flying through that pass are being turned into chopped liver by the huge fan blades.

Lastly, wind turbine generated electricity costs more than natural gas and coal fired generating plants. Our utilities are required by state regulation to purchase this more expensive power, and the utility ratepayers are paying for it.

As for those mirror solar panels, one plant just built here in CA is not even close to meeting the electricity levels it was projected to generate. Lots of excuses such as more cloudy days than anticipated and the funniest of all excuse that the con trails from passenger jets is cutting down the sun’s rays. These plants are just one more government boondoggle. In a few years, we will read about how they are going bankrupt and unable to pay off their bonded indebtedness.

Everyone involved in this fiasco needs to be hoisted on their own petard.

This one uses high temp molten salt. The intense level of heat generated allows it to store some energy and produce power after dark. This moves some of the peak generation at midday to the evening peak when folks come home from work, cook dinner, etc.

--one of the solar scams that didn't get adequate funding (even by being in California just across the border from where I live in the winter) had applied for a thirty mile, 6" natural gas pipeline just before the failure-

-reassuring every one that the "natural gas wasn't being used for 'energy production'"--it was just necessary to keep the fluids warm at night so it could be more productive during the day---

-good post—and. last I heard of it, the worlds largest solar scam here just south of Las Vegas is only producing “25 to 50%” of expected power—the sun hasn’t been shining enough here in southern Nevada-—
