"The Last Valley" Best Post-SHTF Movie Ever
Youtube ^ | February 25, 2015 | Matt Bracken

"The Last Valley" stars Michael Caine and Omar Sharif, it's set in Germany in the 1640s during the Thirty Years War.I stumbled upon this forgotten masterpiece from 1971 a few days ago when I obtained some old VHS tapes from a friend.

Just update the story line 400 years, change it to Christians vs Muslims, give everybody an AK-47, and this may be what the future is going to bring.

The movie flopped at the box office for a number of reasons unrelated to its quality. The John Barry soundtrack alone is stunning.

"The Last Valley" is now on Youtube in 12 minute segments. At least watch the first two segments, if you have time. Many social and military issues in the movie are timeless. This is the best SHTF/prepper movie I can ever remember watching.

The Last Valley is an excellent movie and has been a favorite of mine since it came out.

I believe that I have a DVD of it somewhere.

Thanks. I’d watch Michael Caine read names out of the phone book.

It’s common courtesy to ping someone if you are mentioning them.

I’ve read two or three histories of it and I’m still confused, even though I was a history major in college and graduated with honors. It’s much easier to understand the American Civil War, the English Civil War, WWI, and WWII than the 30 Years’ War.

Small town 20th century West Virginia coal mining hillbillies take on Europes “Nobility” in the middle of the Thirty Years War.

I’ve read pretty much all of the “1632/Ring of Fire” series of books. It’s a fascinating read and Flint and others weave historical facts into the narrative quite well.

My wife’s first words after reading (without my prompting) The Road were “I want a bunker.” Hey, whatever gets the point across...

LOL.

And I was giving you the easy route. :-)

The usenet is best for someone that uses it regularly. In addition to video content, you can get ebooks, audiobooks and music. My wife devours audio books and ebooks, so it is *very* useful for me.

Travis, YouTube has the whole 2:05 movie available. Good quality too. No need to watch it in segments.

I like the part where Michael Caine is about to kill some guy, he says, IIRC, “Make peace mit yore Gott!”

In other words, more distant historically and an order of magnitude more complicated than the Spanish Civil War, which is already more complicated than any history class will deal with.

The Last Valley has no sci-fi elements at all

Well, yah. Hadn't expected it to have any.    =;^)

In fact, I'd started reading 1632 despite the Sci-Fi element. It quickly resolved into a highly political story of survival...the introduction of the American Revolutionary model of government during a time when bloodlines and royalty were all that mattered.
