Cops Shot And Killed 17-Year-Old Girl At Texas Police Station
Talking Points Memo ^ | January 26, 2015 | Caitlin MacNeal

Posted on 01/26/2015 9:36:02 PM PST by 2ndDivisionVet

The Longview Police Department placed three officers on leave after a 17-year-old girl was shot and killed in the lobby of the station last week, the Marshall News Messenger reported.

According to officials, Kristiana Coignard entered the Texas police station on Thursday evening brandishing a weapon. Police spokeswoman Kristie Brian said Coignard used a phone in the lobby to call police dispatch and asked to see an officer.

When officers arrived in the lobby, she "came at the officers" with a weapon, according to Brian. Police did not confirm what type of weapon Coignard had, but Longview Mayor Jay Dean said that she was carrying a knife, according to the Marshall News Messenger.

Justice of the Peace James Mathis said Coignard was shot "multiple times," according to the Marshall News Messenger.

Police have not released many details about the incident. It remains unclear why Coignard entered the police station and what occurred before she was shot.

The 17-year-old was living with her aunt, Heather Robertson, who told ThinkProgress that her niece had been struggling with mental illness.

“I think it was a cry for help," Robertson said about Coignard's actions last week. "I think they could have done something. They are grown men. I think there is something they are not telling us."

Robertson said her niece has struggled with depression and bipolar disorder since her mother died when she was four years old. Coignard has been hospitalized twice after trying to commit suicide. Robertson told ThinkProgress that Coignard "was only violent with herself."

The three officers involved in the incident were placed on leave, and the Texas Rangers are investigating the shooting.

I know, I knowwwww, she actually was an armed assailant.

Now you run along. Go be sure to lock your door tonight, ok? And leave your nightlight on.

Nah, I feel fine.

One less insane knife wielding criminal in this world.

I don’t really know what to tell you, brah.

She walks into a police station with a knife, then calls police, then goes at the police that respond with a knife?

Not only is she crazy, she’s stupid, and she got what she wanted.

I imagine you and her would have gotten along nicely.

Most police stations I’ve seen bristle with CCTV cameras. So let’s see the video. And let’s see the weapon.

All indications are that she was probably a commie sympathizer too. Yes indeed, the world is better place without another liberal wasting oxygen. Kudos on a most outstanding and inspirational post!

Not really concerned about what her political philosophy was, though I did see her showing a peace symbol, which she apparently did not understand considering how she chose to leave this world.

Maybe I should tell you about the time I saw three young boys on bicycles in new Orleans.

I imagine from the looks of them that they were about 12-14.

They biked past a corner house, and upon getting on the long side of the house, each one of them emptied a pistol into the house.

Yes, three real pistols with real bullets in them that kill real people.

There were two children and a baby in that house.

None of them were hit.

Do you think that police or anyone else had a duty to disarm these harmless, little children?

What if one of these cowards shot the baby or the two children in the house to death?

Would we then have a duty to rehabilitate them in juvenile detention?

There are lethal threats in this world that come in all shapes and sizes, at anytime of the day or night, and for any BS reason you can think of, up to and including one of them asked the young girl there out and she told him no, and he decided to try and kill her.

So let me tell you something, you can take your kudos and stuff it where the sun don’t shine, dude.

I don’t care if my point of view inspires you or not. We have the right to self defense in this country, and we includes police. If they felt threatened enough to use deadly force, then that’s what they did.

Whether or not they get charged or not will not change the fact that she is dead and is not going to be coming back.

She chose poorly.

Yes, it (the threat) was neutralized. End of story.

I agree. This was inexcusable. In fact, it was murder. They should have disarmed her. There were plenty of things they could have done short of shooting her dead with a barrage of bullets. Had she been in a hospital setting, and gotten hold of a knife, hospital security and hospital personnel would have gotten the knife away from her, restrained her, and likely without any injuries. Part of a police officer's job and training should be dealing with people with mental health issues who may sometimes in their psychosis be brandishing a weapon. Further, it should be a matter of policy that no one is allowed to commit suicide by cop unless circumstances are such that it is completely unavoidable; a 17-year-old girl with a knife is not that situation, a terrorist with automatic weapons and plenty of ammunition is.

If you can’t disarm that waif brandishing a knife without resorting to shooting her then you’re not the man to be on a police force, policy be damned...

My sentiments exactly. Being within their rights to kill her, and actually deciding to do so, are two different things.

How very brave of them. The odds of her injuring a cop, if handled properly (short of shooting her dead) are next to zero.

Public servants naturally have to put themselves at risk sometimes in the performance of their job. This sort of response is the absolute maximum they could do.

Why not start with something a little less lethal, all thing considered?

Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere
The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
The best lack all conviction, while the worst
Are full of passionate intensity.

Will the day come when Obamcare goons just shoot everyone who’s not mentally “conforming”?

Instead of “I can’t breathe”, perhaps we should wear “I can’t cope” shirts.

Legal battles go on forever for criminals on trial, deciding whether they’re sane enough or not, to even be tried.

She did not even get that much mercy.

A hail of bullets.

You just *know* whatever psychobabble quackery meds they had her on caused this.

Seems to me the family in question had 13 years to get her help or commit her, either they didn`t or it didn`t work. Either way, now she commits ‘suicide by cop’ after the family witnessed two previous unsuccessful attempts and it`s suddenly the cop`s fault? O-K, talk about rationalizing away personal responsibility.

Life ain’t the movies. Which means girls like this don’t have ninja moves. Life is too cheap and it seems some folks just want to a notch on their gun.
