(VANITY) TOURNAMENT OF CHART-TOPPERS ('80S)
me | 1/25/15 | me

Posted on 01/25/2015 7:37:02 AM PST by the OlLine Rebel

OK, FREEPERS, LET'S START THIS CONTEST FOR THE GREATEST SONG OF THE '80S.

The baseline for the contest is the top 7 hits of each year of the '80s, as compiled by BILLBOARD. This is not based on personal preferences, biases, prejudices, or counter-culture reactivity.

The rules in general will be to vote for everything shown. No equivocating, ties, or omissions. Votes will only be counted if the "ballot" is complete.

ROUND 1

We begin by using the #7 songs of each year and paring them from 10 songs to 4 (to set up brackets for the rest of the contest).

1980 "Coming Up" Paul McCartney
1981 "Kiss on My List" Hall & Oates
1982 "Jack & Diane" John Cougar
1983 "Maneater" Daryl Hall & John Oates
1984 "Hello" Lionel Richie
1985 "Everybody Wants to Rule the World" Tears for Fears
1986 "Party All the Time" Eddie Murphy
1987 "Here I Go Again" Whitesnake
1988 "Heaven Is a Place on Earth" Belinda Carlisle
1989 "Wind Beneath My Wings" Bette Midler

TOPICS: Chit/Chat; Hobbies; Miscellaneous; Music/Entertainment
KEYWORDS: 1980s; 80s; 80smusic; americana; billboard; culture; eighties; entertainment; mtv; music; nineteeneighties; nostalgia; popculture; popmusic; popularmusic; rock; rockroll; top40; top40music

Rules for Round 1:

Place all 10 songs in order of your preference. No ties. No omissions ("I hate it so much I refuse to list it"). Such "ballots" will not be counted. All 10 songs must be listed.

Songs will be awarded points from 9 points for the #1 song on your list, to 0 for the last.

Each song will have a point total and be prioritized by that - greatest # points is #1, etc. Ties will have a run-off.

I will give 2 weeks for this round before we go to brackets, to garner more interest and votes, and test how much time may usually be needed.

(NoTE: one does not have to play every single round to participate, although that would be preferred!)

DUE DATE: Sunday Feb 7 @6:00

Belinda Carlisle was always the least talented GoGo. Her song belongs on the bottom.

Thanks Colonel! Gladly. I bet if you don’t like much what is here, you won’t like much later! LOL

Anyway, glad to have you, and shocked to have a reply so soon. (Hoping a week will be enough time for all rounds!)

Put the rest of them above her and you’ll be counted. ;-)

(I agree, she was weak without the Go-Gos. Although in this stack I decided it was better than 1 other.)

There isn’t a song on that list that doesn’t suck chose. All of them should be banned from ever being played again, and the “artists” put in front of a firing squad.

This is like being asked “What’s your favorite: pus, phlegm, feces, drool, sewage, snot, or pond scum?”. Come to think of it, that sounds like a DC law firm.

Maybe. But she was the hottest.

Also, the Go-Go's never achieved the same level of success without her, though she equaled the success of the Go-Go's without them. Something none of them can claim.

She achieved success, but not quite the level of GGs, I think. GGs are an icon, Carlisle just remembered by those at the time.

I know nothing about these bracket things. But I do know 80s music (to my shame, looking at some of the stuff on this list).

1985 “Everybody Wants to Rule the World” Tears for Fears
1987 “Here I Go Again” Whitesnake
1981 “Kiss on My List” Hall & Oates
1983 “Maneater” Daryl Hall & John Oates
1984 “Hello” Lionel Richie
1988 “Heaven Is a Place on Earth” Belinda Carlisle
1982 “Jack & Diane” John Cougar
1989 “Wind Beneath My Wings” Bette Midler
1980 “Coming Up” Paul McCartney
1986 “Party All the Time” Eddie Murphy

I don’t think I’ve ever heard “Coming Up”, but it can’t be worse than Eddie Murphy as a pop singer. I remember being embarrassed for him when that came out, so I put I song I’ve never heard ahead of it!

I suspect that whatever 4 make the cut are first round casualties... not a strong list of songs at all.

I bet you have.

I was confused by the title, too. I know the tune well, but could not understand the words (thought at best it was “coming on”) and would not be able to ID the singer as McCartney.
