The New York Fire Department has dropped a test to measure the strength and physical aptitude of its members amid concerns that there are too few females on the force.
Critics are slamming the move as a “lowering of standards” and lives could be endangered because people with inadequate skills will be tasked to do the same jobs as before. Supporters believe it will allow otherwise-competent firefighters to stay on the job.
“It’s a lowering of the standards across the board,” said one former FDNY official.
He believes that first-year Fire Commissioner Daniel Nigro should be concerned with doing a good job and saving people, not with what is politically correct. He explained, “What needs to matter is how well you perform the tasks of firefighting. The question is when you’re 270 pounds and you’re on the fourth floor and someone comes through that window — can they pick you up and drag you out or not?”

Well, that’s stupid. And political. At least I can say that my agencies physical aptitude test is identical for males and females, and has been for 20+ years.

This is opening the door for anybody who can’t physically do the job, man or woman. Why should taxpayers be forced to pay the salary of someone who can’t physically do the job they are paid for?
Hopefully you're not a cop. As a judge has determined that departments can NOT HIRE someone because they are too smart.
Those finding themselves in a blaze and overcome by smoke will be expected to winch themselves out of the windows of burning building by use of block and tackle which the NYFD recommends be kept on hand. The fireperson will provide direction by megaphone.

By their logic I can say hey, I’d like to be an airline pilot. No, I don’t have a pilots license, but that shouldn’t be an entrance barrier. Sign me up, I’ll “wing it” on the job just like the unfit, unsuitable firefighters will.

The fire commissioner isnt exactly the one behind this stupid decision. The socialist mayor is. Nigro (what a moniker) is only following orders because he wants to keep his paycheck.
