Fran Tarkenton rips Robert Griffin III: 'He will never make it'
CBS Sports ^ | December 5, 2014 | Josh Katzowitz

If Hall of Fame quarterback Fran Tarkenton doesn't think much of your abilities as an NFL quarterback, he has no problem speaking his mind.

A.J. McCarron knows all about this. As does Tim Tebow and, yep, Brett Favre. And so does Robert Griffin III and Mike Shanahan, especially after Tarkenton went negative after the Redskins lost their 2012 playoff game to the Seahawks.

Now, during an interview with theMMQB.com's Jenny Vrentas, Tarkenton took another crack at Griffin, who's lost his starting Redskins job to Colt McCoy and who very well could be off the team before 2015.

Tarketon says he proclaimed two years ago that Griffin wouldn't make it, and one big reason why is because of the quarterback's attitude.

"He came into the league with an arrogance," Tarkenton said. "He goes into Washington, which is the worst place for him to go. They have been so hungry for a quarterback and for winning. They worshipped him. Here's RG3; he's our savior, he's our guy. His father gets involved and is in the locker room -- I have never seen a father in a locker room on Sundays. The owner, Dan Snyder, adopts him and becomes his best friend. So RG3, at 21, 22, thought he was Jesus, right? And he was making pontifical statements about how he approached the game. I was listening to him the offseason after his rookie year, which was not a bad year, and I'm saying, 'Holy [expletive], this guy is out of control with his ego.' That was the first sign you saw that he lacked leadership."(continued)

His attitude is bad...without a doubt. Even worse is his playing style that leaves him hurt and unable to play several times during the season.

Style that works in college doesn’t always translate well in pro-football.

everybody was all hyped over the read-option offense/quarterbacks but as they say if you don’t remember the past you’re doomed to repeat it....

anyone remember the short lived career of one kordell stewart???

I think the philosophy in NFL is fundamentally flawed.

Kordel Stewart was no RG3. He won't make it in the league, but that's because every coach in the NFL is a bland conformist (you have to be to keep a job and get a new job on e you're fired). They all run the same plays and blame losses on execution.

He said the same thing about Tim Tebow, and said Tebow could not successfully transition to being a pass receiver, since no one ever had.

So I called the talk show and reminded him of Marlin Briscoe.

You know, the former Denver Broncos starting quarterback, who became a wide receiver for the Miami Dolphins and BEAT YOU in the Super Bowl.

Yup, both in scrambling and in class.

“Today’s Tarkenton is Russell Wilson”

And neither one is “black enough”. Go Hawks!

The trouble with placing too much confidence in “star” college players, is that most of their opponents are future accountants, salesmen and consultants. Of the thousands who play top college athletics, only a few are good enough to make a living at it. It’s got to be a tough hurdle when suddenly all of the opposing players are former college standouts instead of athletic students.

That jump from college to the pros is more than what the cheer leaders that run their mouths during the draft know. To them it is all about the money.

I liked Wilson’s interview after their loss to Dallas.

http://blogs.seattletimes.com/seahawks/2014/10/12/seahawks-quarterback-russell-wilson-i-was-a-little-off-on-some-throws-that-im-normally-not/

Excerpts:

“I think, first of all, I could have played a lot better. I didn’t play my best game....For whatever reason, we were just off by a little bit. I’ll take the blame for it, I think I could have played a lot better. That’s the thing you look forward to, another opportunity and another week next week, and you have to go back and look at the drawing board, and see what you can do better, and see what you did well, too. Not everything is terrible. We’re still a great football team. And move forward.”

... but at the end of the day I think it comes down to, when you get your opportunities, capitalizing on it. For whatever reason, we weren’t able to do that, and I can definitely fix that. I know that I can play better, and that’s the best part. ”

(On what he did not do well today…) “I was a little off on some throws that I’m normally not. I felt just a little bit off, here and there, maybe an inch or two to the right or the left. Other than that, I think that’s what it comes down to. I know I can complete those balls, I know that I will, and I know that I’ll get it fixed. ”

...We do everything we can to play our best game. I felt like I let some people down, or whatever, so you just have to keep moving, keep moving forward.... Who’s going to bring the boxing gloves and be ready to go for the week? That’s the great part, that we have to look forward to, as a team. We know that we’re a great football team, we know that we have the guys, we know we have the right guys, we know that we have a great coaching staff and the best fans in the world. So, we’re going to be ready to go.”

It wasn’t in this interview, but I have heard him say several times (whether about how hard he trains, studies, or how he looks up to Tony Romo, Drew Brees, etc.) “One day I want to be a great quarterback”.

Poor RG3, even internet threads about him get hijacked by Russel Wilson fans.

Wilson is something. Golden Tate was stepping out with his wife, who he promptly divorced. Golden Tate is an idiot, but a pretty good receiver. He’s having a good year in Detroit.

Wilson is the whole enchilada.
