On Sept. 30, the U.S. Army unceremoniously stood up a new headquartersthe 1st Special Forces Commandat Fort Bragg, North Carolina. The division-level unit brings together more than 15,000 Green Berets and other special troops in a single new organization.
Previously, the Armys Special Operations Command had directly controlled all of these troops plus others on a wide range of missions. The idea behind the new HQ is to assemble a force specifically tailored for dealing with what the Pentagon calls hybrid warfare.
Simply put, hybrid warfare is a blend of straight-up traditional combatwith infantry, tanks and artilleryand secretive insurgency. Probably the biggest practitioner of hybrid warfare is Russia.
Just look at whats going on in Ukraine, where Russian-supplied separatist insurgents are fighting alongside disguised Russian troops in an attempt to seize territory from the government in Kiev and bring it under Moscows sway.
This is a real requirement based on Russias hybrid warfare approach, as well as the need for partners in places like Libya, Syria and Iraq, where we want to help stabilize the chaos, Navy captain Robert Newson, a fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations, said of the new Army HQ.
This reorganization has been in the planning roughly a year, the Armys main Special Forces headquarters explained. [The Command] will not be fully capable until July 2015.
To be fair, training foreign fightersunconventional warfare, the military calls ithas long been a main mission for Army Special Forces, albeit one that had fallen out of favor recently.
After 9/11, the Pentagon deployed Special Forces and Army Rangers, Navy SEALs and other Special Operations Forces all over the world to fight insurgents and hunt terrorists. They largely took direct actionhitting the bad guys on their ownrather than working through local forces.
But from the 1940s into the 1990s, the Special Forces mostly practiced unconventional warfareindirect action, if you will, and the focus of the new 1st Special Forces Command. In that way, the new HQ brings Special Forces back to its roots, said Newson, a SEAL officer who served in Afghanistan, Iraq and Yemen.
This indirect method of warfare is ideal in situations where an American presence could be too costly or be counter-productive, Newson explained.
The 1st Special Operations Command will bring together all the units that are best at unconventional missions, including Green Berets, psychological warfare experts, civil affairs specialists and special logistics personnel.
The division-level headquarters will not include the unique planes and helicopters of the 160th Special Operation Aviation Regiment or the 75th Ranger Regiments elite infantry. These units will stick to direct action.
The Army wants the new HQ to be able to quickly assemble Green Beret task forces to handle specific crises. These temporary task forces would draw on the personnel from within 1st Special Forces Commandand potentially pair them up with commandos from the Navy, Marines and Air Force.
And under the same plan that creates 1st Special Forces Command, the fourth battalion in each of the Armys seven Special Forces Groups will reorganize specifically for working with allied troops, with new detachments of Green Berets that 1st Special Forces Command will be able to peel off and send overseas.
Jedburghs were the paramilitary arm of Allied intelligence organizations like the Office of Strategic Servicesthe predecessor of the Central Intelligence Agency. The Jedburgh commandos sneaked into Axis-occupied Europe and Asia to work with resistance groups and harass occupying forces.
Now, the Armys new Special Forces structure doesnt actually add manpower. In fact, the Green Berets will actually cut 1,000 people in order to stay within shrinking budgets, an official told War Is Boring.
Simply put, hybrid warfare is a blend of straight-up traditional combatwith infantry, tanks and artilleryand secretive insurgency. Probably the biggest practitioner of hybrid warfare is Russia.
So, basically just warfare.
Probably to be used against us when Obama declares martial law.
I read about halfway through the article, and quit thinking about the fact the leader of our military is the same guy that stated to Medvedwhatsit of Russia to take a message to Putin that he would have more leeway after the election. I don’t believe the current military under the command of C In C Obama is really interested in any conflict with Russia. More like kissy kissy with Putin, and every other rotten dictator oppressing the World population. It’s like Obama is doing everything he can to have his Marxist, Leftist buddies let him into the club including shouting PUHLEEZE.
I’m still rooting for the present mayor of Kiev, Vitali Klitschko.
LOL, that was my first thought too. Is the country going to survive two more years of this ass hat?
IMO we will need forces able to penetrate and complete missions on much smaller scales than typical to military history. For example, if we had the wherewithal to deal with Bin Laden swiftly and completely (along with a sprinkling of bacon) 13 years ago we would have done more than fire a couple cruise missiles. These new forces need the benefit of deep intelligence of the kind liberal pansies would strip from us in the interest of “fairness.”
Active Duty ping.
Heard it in speeches that special ops would be the way to go in the future. Putting them all in one place seems stupid to me. Should be a west coast division, too.
It sure as hell ain’t to be used against our “unprivileged enemies”.
So, basically, this is just a way to rebuild our Army into a leaner, meaner group ..??
Works for me!
I’m not sure I agree with you. I think this is just the Army’s way of regrouping. And .. I don’t think I’m going to be concerned about them.
I’m more concerned about the sinister groups infiltrating the border just 38 miles from where I live.
You can take this crap with a grain of salt. There has been a Special Forces Command for around 20 years. Yes, they are reorganizing for future conflicts but it is nothing new. Whoever runs this website is basically a wannabee.
All this does is open up more officer billets and put another bureaucratic layer on SF guys trying to get the mission done.
Another layer of management to fix things.
That also will probably open up 3 more GO slots. Yep, making the force smaller and top heavy will also help.
Oh great, in addition to all the other gear the grunts have to hump, now they’ll have to sling a man purse over their shoulder with who knows what all inside it. Are you sure this story didn’t come from DuffelBlog?
Deja Vu all over again.
