NH: Dog Fights off Coyote that Attacks Mistress

 Mac, Coyote Fighter

The first coyote was recorded in New Hampshire in 1972.  By 1980, they were found across the state.  Eastern coyotes have wolf genes, and are larger than the western variety, reaching as much as 60 lbs.

The first coyote attack on a human in New Hampshire occurred in 2012.  Ironically, the boy's dog ran off, leaving him to fight the coyote.  From inquisiter.com:
The boy’s dog ran away when the coyote approached which left the boy to fend off the coyote’s attack on his own. After repeatedly punching the coyote in the nose, the coyote eventually ran off leaving the boy scratched and potentially bitten. As a precautionary measure, the teen is undergoing a course of rabies shots intended to thwart the deadly viral infection.
The second coyote attack occurred just a couple of days ago, near Greenland, NH.  In this case the woman's dog was an able defender, and gunshots failed to drive off the animal.  From wmur.com:
The woman involved in the Monday morning attack didn't want to be identified. Her 4-year-old dog, Mac, has too many wounds to count and is wearing a pain patch on his hind leg but was credited with fighting off the coyote.
The woman and her dog were attacked while they were walking in a field on her property. Her husband heard her screams and drove his truck to separate them from the wild animal.
"He fired off a couple of shots," said Police Chief Tara Laurent. "Not at the coyote, because it was near his wife, but he shot off a couple of rounds thinking it would scare the animal off, which is usually the case. And it didn't seem to faze the coyote in this particular case.
The attack occurred in a rural area of fields and forest.  No mention is made of the make, model, or caliber of the firearm used.

The man and wife are undergoing rabies shots as a precautionary measure.  Their dog, Mac the Coyote Fighter, is recovering.

I keep a loaded 12 ga. by my patio door, and I can open, safe-off, and fire in less than 2 secs. It’s rare anything I want to wing or kill passes through. Coyotes thinking they are safe, do not make it.

Wow—that is a beautiful cat/ragdoll! I really like that name, Ollie. Amazing to both be from Ga. I was born and raised in FL. But southeast GA suits me fine.

Whoa. What are the odds?

I went to school for three years in East Point. It was a different demographic in those days.

Most dogs will fight with and for their master or mistress.

Our old dog would fight for my kids, but since I drove away a bigger dog attacking him by smacking it with a 2x4 he would hide behind me when confronted.

Yep they are all over Georgia. When I hunt the land owners asks us to shoot all coyotes on site. Including of course any hogs encountered.

I just moved up here to Fayetteville. I got cancer again and my son said he’d take care of me. Then he got married. to put it lightly, she ignores me completely and will do NOTHING for me or with me, even when I had major surgery.
All my close friends are back in Houston.

That is a difficult situation. I prayed for you. Prayer is not passive, it is active. Prayer moves mountains. Remember the old saying, if you pray for rain, bring an umbrella. I hope you see health and relationship improvements soon. I will continue to pray. God is still the God of miracles.

A similar thing happened to me just a few weeks ago but my property is in rural Alabama. The coyote was either brave, stupid or rabid, I did not know, but he would not leave. My female GSD, who is on a cable run, was going nuts. I shot him and thru his carcass into the woods. It was gone the next day.

Hadn't seen a coyote since, though I hear them yipping sometimes at night. I did hear some loud howls and noises last night—though it sounded weird. Then all the rain started.

The night one followed me home Mr GG2 went out on the deck with our dying rabbit call and tried to get it up close enough to shoot it. We could hear it moving around behind the woodpile but it would not come out where he could get q shot at it. They are very wary.

Okay, good point.
But perhaps this guy is not as good a shot as you are.

Shimmer, sorry it took so long to respond. I tried to answer right away, but for some reason I couldn’t get the comment to post. Since then I’ve been able to post again, but I just now got back to answering. But, I *have* been praying. I hope all is well, or at least improving. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

Blessings.
