It sounds like a radical idea: Stop incarcerating women, and close down women’s prisons. But in Britain, there is a growing movement, sponsored by a peer in the House of Lords, to do just that.
The argument is actually quite straightforward: There are far fewer women in prison than men to start with — women make up just 7 percent of the prison population. This means that these women are disproportionately affected by a system designed for men.
But could women’s prisons actually be eliminated in the United States, where the rate of women’s incarceration has risen by 646 percent in the past 30 years? The context is different, but many of the arguments are the same.
Essentially, the case for closing women’s prisons is the same as the case for imprisoning fewer men. It is the case against the prison industrial complex and for community-based treatment where it works better than incarceration. But there is evidence that prison harms women more than men, so why not start there?[continued]

Even for protesting near an abortion clinic, Pat? What about conservative and Republican women? Shouldn’t we at least put them in jail if they don’t change their views after some time in a re-education camp?
Women and minorities hardest hit
It sounds like a foolish idea. There are plenty of women who have committed crimes for which imprisonment is an appropriate punishment. That said, I suspect the number of women in prison for any crime is far exceeded by the number of men imprisoned for crimes which either shouldn’t be crimes at all, or for which society would be better served by imposing public flogging as the sentence, rather than imprisonment.
Close the women’s prisons and make all prisons unisex. Works great for the Army and the Navy, will work just as well for our Correctional System.......
What an awesome idea! I can see the benefits already, the gang bangers instead of sending out minors to commit their violent crimes would shift the violence completely into the hands of their women, hell it just might force the mijos right the hell out of the gangs since the women would have a free hand to do whatever they wanted. Brilliant, absolutely brilliant, and would probably reduce the population of men’s prisons as well!

What a about women who murder? Is community service sufficient? What if they murder multiple husbands or children? Maybe a few weekends in the local jail and a few weeks of picking up trash on the roadside?

There is a maximum security women's prison in the part of Virginia in which I live (executions of female capital criminals also occur at this facility).
I have had reason to visit this facility as part of my job. Trust me when I tell that you you do NOT want those women living in a "small custodial center" near their (and YOUR) family while they serve a "community sentence" (whatever that is).

Equal consequences for equal crimes. If a woman murders, she gets the same penalty as a man. No discrimination.
The left really doesn’t want anyone in prison except anti-abortion protesters and climate change deniers.

I worked with juvies. No one wanted to work the girls’ ward and we’d volunteer weekends or whatever it took to avoid that duty. Witches be crazy. The boys could be reasoned with whereas the girls would just as soon shank you as to look at you.
I would point out that women make up far more than 7% of the population, and men make up the huge majority of the prison population. Therefore, men are being disproportionately punished when compared to women, not the other way around. Simple math.
Grew up near a big prison (Chino) and never had any desire to get into corrections, law enforcement or related.
