3D Printer Hack Makes Automatic Tattoo Machine

French designers alter 3D printer to let you ink yourself

3D printing technology has now followed the curve of most emerging inventions. What starts as a prototype gets picked up by the industries the idea most impacts, then by corollary industries, then by the art and hobbyist crowd. This month, Paris design studio Appropriate Audiences made that final step by hacking a 3D printer and turning it into a tattoo gun.

The printing device itself, called Tatoue, affixes a tattoo gun on rails to a square metal frame. The frame and gun can move on three axes so the tattooing device can follow the path of any line or curve of the body. The process is simple. Step One: Choose a tattoo design from a bank of graphic files, or create and upload your own. Step Two: Load the file into the 3D printer exactly as you would any other design for printing. Step Three: Insert your limb — it currently works best with arms — into the frame. Step Four: Hold still while the printer executes the design and gives you new permanent body art.

While operating, a sensor on the machine reads the dimensions and texture of the skin to make certain the tattoo is following the topography of the body.

The founders of Appropriate Audiences, Pierre Emm, Piotr Widelka and Johan Da Silveira, say that the prototype works but can be improved for flexibility and accessibility. They also note that the concept can be refined for use in medicine, fashion and art. They are currently working on a third version of the machine that will accommodate tattooing any part of the body rather than just a limb.

Later this year, the team plans to tour the world to interview tattoo artists about new techinques and styles so they can adjust further versions of their machine to match.

Can it do hair transplants? Biden might be interested.

Step Three: Insert your limb

I don't think so.....

Insert your limb — it currently works best with arms — into the frame.

You just know someone is going to try other "limbs"...

Interesting, but even if I had the desire to tattoo myself, I sure wouldn’t use a 3D printer to get it done.

He needs a brain transplant more than he needs hair transplants.

In my professional opinion as a veteran tech writer (hee, hee) yes, it could proof read, but you still could have problems with putting in a perfectly spelled word that was the wrong choice; that would still be an issue, especially with women’s names.

Personally, I think anyone who gets a tattoo has had their brains hacked. They may feel like a million bucks with a fresh image on their skin. However, it does not take much time for that image to be the ashen results of self- mutilation.

Fresh out of school, met a girl named Marie
Had her name tattooed, where everyone could see
Nine years later, met a girl named Sue
Now it’s me and Sue, and Marie’s tattoo.

We can have opinions on the value of tattoos in general but what interests me is how people are applying 3D printing to almost anything. Build houses, sure. Tattoo people, no problem. Create human organs? yup, working on that too. It’s a wide open field with unlimited potential.

I’ve never had a tattoo and never will, I just thought it was interesting.

LOL!

My ex’s new ‘bride’ insisted he have my name blackened out on his ‘My True Love’ tattoo before she’d marry him.

I hope it hurt. I hope it hurt REAL bad. :)

I actually got the lyrics wrong. They’re from a song by Steve Seskin ‘Seemed like a good idea at the time.’ Corrected lyrics follow:

Fresh out of school, in love with Marie
Had her name tattooed for everyone to see
Nine years later I married a girl named Sue
Now it’s me and Sue and Marie’s tattoo
