Vanity: It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas and my daughter wants a handgun.

Excuse me for my 2nd vanity in as many days but I always appreciate FReeper advice.
My adult daughter, who lives by herself in Seattle finally confided to me that the pepper spray she carries doesn't make her feel safe anymore and wants a handgun.
Her only input was that she would like a purple gun. Hey, she's a girl :-)

I found this Ruger .380 on-line but think a larger caliber would be better.
Thanks for your input.

Have her get some handgun training. The NRA handgun class is quite good.

That was my first thought, too: An LCP in purple.

Before suggestions can be made...a few crucial questions:
- what is her general familiarity with firearms?
- how committed is she to ongoing training?
- what is her likelihood to clean and maintain a firearm?
- how will it be used? (e.g. home, travel, full-time carry, etc.)
Good luck with your research.

I second that - have her get the training at a facility where she can try out a bunch of different models to pick the one that suits her.

.380 would do just fine. The LCP has 6+1 mag cap, but this photo doesn’t look right because the weapon looks a lot smaller than it actually is. The picture of the pistol or the shell casing has been manipulated IMO.

Doesnt it just warm your heart when your kids ask for a gun? :)
Before I bought anything Id go to a range that rents and try everything out. I can recommend Wades in Bellevue. They have a pretty good rental counter. They also have a reasonable staff (at least when I lived there) who can help too. Would be good to know what she winds up with.

Mine wants an Springfield XPS.45 for christsakes. “You’ll shoot you eye out” I say...but nothing else . will satisfy her.

I couldn’t agree more. Training and the range happen first.

Agree with S&W .38 revolver. Get one double action only so it can be fired from inside a pocket or purse.
To: PROCON
Look at the Ruger LC9.
Most importantly take her to a gun show or larger store and have her try the grips on as many guns as you can. What fits someone’s hand is completely individual. Narrow it down to a couple candidates.
Then if you can find a place to borrow or rent those guns and have her try them out. THEN you will know.

the pepper spray she carries doesn't make her feel safe anymore and wants a handgun.
If things are so bad she thinks she needs a gun, she should consider moving somewhere safer.
