OS X Yosemite: Yay or Nay
October 18, 2014 | This Just In

Good day. I downloaded the new and improved OS, OS X Yosemite. At first blush, there are some features I miss about Mavericks, but I need to waste.....I mean, spend more time with Yosemite. It's too early to say "yay" or "nay", or perhaps the conclusion won't be so black and white, unless you're a "I HATE! all things Apple...including those snobby Mac Users", of course.

What say you about OS X Yosemite? Any pointers/advice/recommendations by you techies out there?

I’ll answer your question.

I’ve been using Yosemite for almost six weeks; I downloaded the BETA version and have been testing it.

The best thing about this OS is that you can get everything done from the computer. Your phone calls, texts and computer work are all done from the workspace directly in front of you. I get into a flow and just run. It’s a great advantage for someone who actually works from the computer.

About two years ago I bought a Sony Vaio as my travel computer. After I had installed the office suite and the Adobe suite on the Vaio it crashed. I hadn’t had the computer for two days and was not happy. I travel a lot. My laptop is very important to me.

So, I bought a Macbook Pro. Since day one it’s been perfect. Not one problem. No crashes, no delays, no virus program. It reminds me of when I went from swap meet tools to Snap-On; or from a junky 73 Corolla to a new Saab. After I learned the Mac shortcuts and gestures I worked faster; I prefer it to my very good Windows home computer. For me, a Macbook Pro is a tool, not a toy.

And no, I am not a gamer. I’m 65 years-old.

I helped an older friend set up his new Windows computer. I was amazed at the amount of crap-lets that are included, all those temporary programs (Norton and such) that offer you a trial and permanent solicitations.

It reminds me of Direct TV. You pay each month for their service and see 30% advertising channels. Jerks.

Do the app buttons on dock still magnify?

I’d wait a month.

I just reloaded Mavericks from my time capsule because Yosemite’s changes to Safari wouldn’t allow log ins to password-protected websites.

Including the apple site so I could ask for help.

Took several hours trouble shooting this and said the heck with it.

New Safari look with the ever-present favorites bar (couldn’t change it) I didn’t like either and other small annoyances.

YMMV, but I’m happier with Mavericks.

I’ll wait for the bugs to get worked out.

“I’m not 14, I’m not a bobble-headed liberal soccer mom, and no, you can’t have my freaking DNA, pulse, bloodpressure, database my organ systems, and turn my computer and private data into your scanned and cross-referenced property sold to both the NSA and every marketer on the planet while I am “allowed” to run a terminal just as limited as the one you threw a hammer at in 1984.

Forget it.

Linux here I come.”

Actually you have it backwards - Apple is making a stand for user privacy, mainly as a tactic against their main rival, the ever-intrusive Google. Nor will Macs ever be locked in to the App Store as the sole way to get Mac software. The iDevices are a different thing, and there the walled garden approach makes some sense.

All that said, Linux certainly has its virtues as well, as long as you can live without commercial software. It’s also free, although that’s only if you count your time as “free”. For me, Macs are a good compromise in that they run the widest range of software of any computer, and they require the least amount of my time to stay running, secure, and backed up. MacOS is also the most polished OS regarding usability.

Yes, if you want them to. I generally keep Dock magnification turned off.

HELP!

How do I get out of full screen? Reminds me of Windows 8.1. No instructions and the colored buttons go away.

Never mind, hit escape key. That works. I wish the colored buttons remained though.

I just don’t use iCloud for anything but my e-mail. Just because the cloud is available doesn’t mean you have to use it.

Biometrics? iPhone has them, but no Macs do.

As far as software goes, the only Mac software I am aware of that requires an internet connection (doesn’t have to be wifi) is Adobe Creative Suite CC (only the CC version, and it only requires an internet connection once every three months). Of course, that’s Adobe’s fault, not Apple’s.

Sure, there are plenty of “Apps” available for OS X but feature rich applications haven’t gone away. I use tons of feature rich applications, just like I always have. You aren’t required to use the Mac “app store” either, I have bought a lot of my software from other places.

I’m not trying to be quarrelsome, but it sounds like you’re more worried about what might happen than what actually has happened. I’m pretty sure you’re required to have an “Apple ID” which I don’t consider a good thing since some people might not want one (I don’t see what the big deal about getting one would be either as it can be a “junk” email account), but other than that I can’t see how owning a Mac is to forcing users to do anything.

Hit ESC or move the mouse to the top and the top bar will reappear.

You probably could make sense of that, but the way I phrased it wasn’t technically clear. . .

move the mouse pointer to the top of the screen and the OS X “top bar” and the control bar on top of the window will reappear.

Thank you.

That’s a very helpful and very honest analysis.

While it is admittedly virtually impossible to tell from my post of exasperation, I am actually a fanboy going back a very long time and at one point I actually worked for Apple when they were making their first portable.

Nevertheless, IMHO Apple is pursuing an incrementalist yet determined approach to biometrically identified, cloud controlled, off-site data computing. What they call security and safety is, to me, big brother monitoring. Their Apple ID is seriously non-trivial person-software-hardware data tracking, and they have been very open about wanting to move all of their OS architecture to “i” style.

So everyone else is doing it too? Yep, they are. I won’t even address the Seattle idiots, they’ve always been obvious. And of course Google just laughs in your face and has hipsters spit out arrogant data-grabbing declarations between lattes. But Apple’s refusal to admit they’re just as bad makes them even worse to me. They add an insult to injury, a demand I accept their Big Mommy assurances and that I make myself 9 years old with trust. Sorry, no sale. And the attempt is more than annoying - its enraging. Because its a demand and a lie that reveals Apples contempt for everyone. In other words, pure liberalism.

And if any of you think this little drama about the FBI being unable to reach data is true because of Apple’s heroic software encryption standards, you haven’t been reading the same articles I have on hardware back doors, or lack of cloud security. Doesn’t anyone get curious when the FBI starts yelling about Apple’s impenetrable security right after Apple’s biggest and most embarrassing software security failure in its history? Well I do.

Like I said, I’m a fanboy. I use a Mac, and I love it. But what’s going on with Apple (as well as most of the rest of the computing world) has me pretty depressed. It’s all about tracking people now - all of it, everywhere. And it’s grown so stark that Apple’s Happy Face looks like a clown in one of those slasher movies to me.

But of course, it’s the hippest, sleekest and most fashionable possible clown.

Can I uninstall the OS X Yosemite, then reinstall once the kinks are worked out?

Face it; we’re going to be watched by big brother, big sister, big business and big investigators.

They have license plate scanners that record traffic at airports. So, what do we do?

I’ve said I’m not afraid of the truth; I’m afraid of the lies that abusive powers use.

Get the best computer and live its benefits.
