India’s Sanitation Problem

Diarrheal diseases kill 700,000 children in India every year

Nationwide, at least two-thirds of India’s 1.2 billion people still defecate in the open, and many do not understand the dire public health consequences. Diarrheal diseases kill 700,000 children in India every year while also contributing to widespread malnutrition and childhood growth stunting, as well as diseases like typhoid and cholera. (1)

In an attempt to improve upon this situation, Indian leaders are taking on the taboo of public hygiene, one of the country’s great problems. Narendra Modi, India’s prime minister, says building toilets is a priority over temples. His finance minister, Arun Jaitley, set a goal of ending defecating in the open by 2019. That will be 150 years since the birth of Mohandas Gandhi, who said good sanitation was more important than independence. (2)

In 150 years the US went from the first trans-Atlantic steam ship to walking on the moon. I just don’t understand it.

It seems that they think indoor toilets are dirty and unsanitary, and unnatural, unlike walking out outside and defecating on the ground, (not in outhouses).

We did when we were living in Saudi Arabia. We INTENDED on going to "those places" that we wouldn't visit in a MILLION YEARS when we got home, so we went then.

ALL real pit holes.

I DID think that Mexico was THE filthiest place in the world, then the middle east, then India, then Africa. Out last place to visit was China.

CHINA won the "FILTHY" award HANDS DOWN.

“....people still defecate in the open,....”

.
If the lights go out in America because of a terrorist attack or whatever, we will be defecating in our backyard (or in our neighbor’s if he is not looking).

Say your prayers of thanksgiving every time you flush the toilet and you hear the water rushing.

Gandhi was murdered by an opponent of the abolition of the caste system.

Wow! I'm shocked.

I'm not surprised. China gets special attention from the world for some reason, so the REAL China is NEVER, ever shown.

You have to go there and SMELL the place. There is NOTHING like the smell of a place to tell your all about it. FILTHY. I've hear all the PR on how it's changed. SOME things don't change about a culture.

My read: the Chinese have produced FABULOUS art work, literature and ALL the good stuff that a culture can produce. They really are something.
Their music SUCKS big time. They don't come CLOSE to the Italians and German for music of all time.
They produce FABULOUS silk and their shops, "sweatshops," earn that name as they are sad places for Westerners to see.

NO DOUBT the Chinese see themselves 100% the opposite as I see them, but I have Western, Christian and American values. I think females are as worthwhile as males. I don't judge cultures on how many MALES they can produce but by the things they produce in the way of art, culture, health standards and such.

My husband and I did get to visit China way back in 1981, when it first opened to the world. I also live in an area where there are TONS of Chinese. The ones here, BOAs (fresh off the Boeing) and CIA's (Chinese in America) do refuse to speak English and to meld into our society. They still feel, by their words and actions, that they really, really are superior to the rest of the planet.
I don't regard ABC's (American Born Chinese) as anything but 100% Americans.

As for the FOBs and CIAs, now I am simply as annoyed by them as they are by me. Only this is MY country and we speak English, are Christian and are clean, clean, clean. I LOVE it and am therefore FAR MORE patient with their superiority complex than if I were living in China or somewhere foreign where they are way-too-many Chinese...and HAD to put up with their superiority complex.
It's NOT "superior" for a country to be known for its FILTH, filth, filth.

Tourists now are conducted by very STRICT guides to be shown ONLY the best and cleanest. Hah, they get to miss the filth that we saw. China was JUST opened to the West and had NOT CLUE ONE as to what we Westerners considered FILTHY. We never did say anything to anyone but my face ALWAYS expresses exactly what I am thinking.
My husband told me LONG AGO never to take up poker. :o)

Lol. I know WAY too much about the Chinese, don't I?

I'm not being harsh, am I?

I’ve heard (from missionaries) that the dirtiest part is the very air one has to breathe in urban areas. They came back to visit their families for the holidays and did laundry. The parkas they wore everywhere (colder northern China) had to be washed five or six times before the discharge water wasn’t filthy and stinking.

I was listening to a list of top ten good thing and top ten bad things about visiting China on YouTube.

Among the top ten bad things was that parents still allowed their children to defecate in public. Evidently, when they sense their kids need to go, they just let them drop trou and go where they are, wherever they happen to be.

When in China, watch where you step ... if you can see past all of the smog!

"Their music SUCKS big time."

I suspect that the horribleness of Klingon opera expressed in the Star Trek series is a sly stab at Chinese music.

Yes, yes and YES.

Between China and India, the filthy award does go to China. I was SHOCKED at how filthy Mexico, Africa and India were...until I got to the "filthy" capital of the planet: China, which means "center of the world" in Chinese.

Isn't it interesting that some of these OLD, old societies sometimes tend to lean on their old accolades and forget that NO ONE cares now that back 3000 years they had big, bad civilizations?

Lol. You are so correct. Imagine you remembering that!
I do remember Warf singing to that pig-woman-piano player somewhere out in the galaxy. :o)

Gandhi was the Jessie Jackson of his era. Just a shake down artist in a diaper.
India is off my honey bucket list, if I ever have to go there I will fill my suitcase with powerbars, bottled water, purel and Clorox wipes. Hopefully I won’t be there long enough to have to go number 2.
My brother had an airline stop there one time and the Indians came on the plane and fumigated it!
