Uh....the same way anyone stands up for themselves when some jerk is attempting to intimidate?

Are you saying you believe the husband would be abusive if he stood up for himself and shut her down? Because I don't know what to say to that, really.

Again, a person may set out with the intention of intimidating or mistreating you, but they can only succeed (especially in the long term) if you stand there and allow it to happen.

That is exactly how it should be handled, IMO.
