The Federal Election Committee (FEC) is asking Sen. Harry Reid (D-Nev.) to explain the listing of more than $16,000 in holiday gifts in a campaign filing, according to a report.
Ralston Reports, run by Nevada journalist Jon Ralston, reported Tuesday that 2016 campaign money was used on presents for supporters.
Ralston said he learned the gifts were actually purchased by Reids granddaughter, Ryan Elisabeth Reid, who sells jewelry in Berkeley, Calif.
She bought the gifts using the campaigns money for Reids donors and backers, the report says.
The filing only identified her as Ryan Elisabeth, and Ralston said he later figured out she was Reids relative.
In a letter, the FEC said Reids campaign must explain $11,370 and $5,416 expenditures by April 25.
Itemized disbursements must include a brief statement or description of why each disbursement was made, the letter read.
Friends of Harry Reid representative Chris Anderson told Ralston, The campaign complied with all FEC rules.
In a statement provided to The Hill, Reid said he would reimburse the campaign for the expenditure.
"I thought it would be nice to give supporters and staff thank-you gifts that had a personal connection and a Searchlight connection, but I have decided to reimburse the campaign for the amount of the expenditure.
Reid is not up for reelection until 2016, but already began planning for another campaign last October.
Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval (R) has been floated as a possible GOP challenger to Reid that year.
Good reporting, to find the relationship.
Another way to help the youth do what they want, and assist them to avoid a job that pays.
Government funding like Obamacare, but with connections.
That said, Nevada will keep voting for him, as long as he has a pulse.
They’re sure to name a wing in hell for Hairy Reed.
I was under the impression that this sort of this was illegal. My mistake...
I wish these refunds had to go to the other party’s campaign fund. I’m sick of hearing that “I didn’t know my campaign bought that” or “I didn’t know that Mr X donated anything”.
Ok, your explanation’s fine and you don’t need to admit guilt. Now give 10X the amount to your opposition in the election (or to the other party general fund if you aren’t running this year) and we can move on.
Reid’s a millionaire, he could have bought these things with his own money but just couldn’t resist using campaign money. The smallness of these weasels never fails to surprise.
There will be a lot of stuff like this on Reid, now that someone’s finally bothering to do due diligence. Thanks Cincinatus’ Wife.
Its ok for them to act like criminals and get away with it because they are criminals and getting away with it, will some one please wake up anyone in the GOP, Oh they’re busy mindmelding with karl rove about arun with huckabee and jeb? The only organization that steps on thier own d##ck and it feels good to them
Move to Nevada and run against him.
