In his press conference on December 20th, President Obama urged the House of Representatives to support the Senates immigration bill, which passed 68-32 in late June. Among the concerns cited by Americans who oppose reform are that immigrants will take their jobs, drive down wages, increase criminal activity, burden the welfare system, and reshape the cultural dynamic of the country. These concerns are mostly ill-founded. The legitimate concerns have real solutions, and a more open immigration policy will be a net benefit for all Americans...
Highlights from Article:
- A 2013 study by the American Action Forum states that "immigration reform can raise population growth, labor force growth, and thus growth in Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
- In 2013 the Bipartisan Policy Center came to similar conclusions. It makes the prediction that current provisions, as included in the Senate Bill, would raise GDP 4.8 percent over twenty years.
- According to the Immigration Policy Center, immigrant males between the ages of 18 and 39 (which constitute the greatest portion of the prison population) are five times less likely to be incarcerated than are natives.
- A 2011 survey by the Pew Research Center revealed that 92 percent of second generation and 96 percent of third generation Hispanics speak English proficiently.
- A 2010 Gallup poll revealed that Hispanics attend church services more often than non-Hispanic whites.
- Since an influx of immigrants means an expansion of the labor supply, many assert that the result will be less jobs and lower wages. However, as asserted by Jason Riley, a member of the Wall Street Journal editorial board, The number of jobs in the United States is not static. Its fluid, which is how we want it to be.

Oh, TC...he’s WAY cooler than the Dwarves in “The Hobbit”...
The Dwarf that is the ultimate is Thorin...blond up the body hair and bulk up the arm muscles...yah...that would be DC! LOL!
You don’t fight with us because we recognize your individuality and allow you to exercise it. I would feel terrible if I thought I was responsible for something that made you angry!
You are too valuable here to be dissed. Period. Tell Zon I said so!
Ooh, blond body hair is a little bit personal ...
Everything is easier when people aren’t your family. My brother and I exchange birthday and Christmas cards, and notices of, “Don’t forget it’s Mom’s birthday. Send a card, send flowers, send wine!”
Haven’t seen that one yet. Not sure I approve of Jackson “adding” entire subplots to one of my favorite books.
I vote for the latter...Elves are good...Legolas comes to mind...*hmmmmm*...a mixture of Legolas and Thorin....GAH!!! OVERLOAD!!!
Blond? Erm... That’s grey. Just sayin’... ;-)
I have always found it to be worth whatever effort it takes, to remain underestimated by the world.
LOL...
I don’t approve of it at all, atall! Peter Jackson should spend centuries in the dungeons of Barad-dur, listening to the complete works of Justin Bieber.
However, if you can distance yourself from the book (try alcohol or pretzels), it works as a fun movie. People have said the part with the dragon is amazing in 3-D.
I don’t see how you manage that, when you look so much like a distinguished State Senator from a perfectly rectangular state.
:^)
Meh... 3D won’t impress me into they film it in an immersive VR environment.
I’ll catch to movie when it comes out on either Redbox or Netflix. Will probably spring for a full set of all 3 on the “Directors cut box set” after everything is said and done.
Oh. Gray? Like mine? Dang. The only things that haven’t really changed since Texas are my legs...everything else seems to have succumbed to Time.
I just finished an ebook called “The Vikings,” which is a short (131 pages) newer take on who they were and what they did, and this author makes no bones about the fact that the Viks actually came to America around 1000 AD.
Several of the historical figures reminded me of you. Have you traced your lineage very far? If not, I would like the honor of doing it for you and Zon. Think about it. Then let me know.
We took some kids to an early afternoon show, didn’t cost much. There’s a lot of fun characterization, among the flourishes of directorial ego that make one’s fillings ache.
I may have that book. Who’s the author?
Oh, never mind. The one I have is “The Fury of the Northmen.”
I have yet to see the second one, but like you, DC, I want all the DVDs.
I first read the boxed set (”The Hobbit,” to “Return of the King”) when the entire set was still underground. I found it at an office supply store. I think I must have read it all within five or six days, but I read it every year since then for the next 40 years.
Now that the movies are out, I find me reading the books about once every two years, but between the books and the movies, I have an excellent grasp on Middle Earth. And I ask me: Why isn’t there REALLY such a place?
Plugging along with the byos on “The Two Towers.” We’ve run into Faramir (sigh) and may get a short chapter in before bedtime tonight.
Robert Wernick is the author of the ebook, “The Vikings.” It is easy to read and easy to understand.
