I had a real black pastor explain that white folks treat church like its God’s funeral and black folks treat it like God’s birthday party.
I would say there is some truth to that, even if it’s incomplete. To most blacks, going to church is their highlight of the week. Many whites do treat going to church as if it’s an interruption to their week.
That is certainly true some places. I’ve been to a black Baptist church a few times and it was one of the most welcoming experiences. I don’t think I ever got more hugs.
All the merrymaking can really brown off (no pun intended, heh heh) more sedate Christians but yeah. In general the more honest praise in the service the more powerful it is going to be. So often, honest praise is blasphemed by the sedate Christians. It shouldn’t be!

And the same black folks (at least 93% in the last election/ 95% in 2008) go and vote for the most anti Christian man in the country for president.
There is NO joy in a Catholic Mass, especially of the Tridentine variety. I must be missing something.
