A digest of comments on the Census Department's report on poverty in the U.S...A few thoughts I would like to share:
"This is sad to read, so many hard working people struggling to make ends meet either in the private or public sectors..."
"The enormous problems this country faces are not the fault of either side and this argument and election will not fix any of them. After WWII we built a gigantic infrastructure and a gigantic technology. They were designed to make life easier and replace human effort...."
"Although I don't dispute that the safety net has prevented those numbers from rising even higher than they are now, I wonder if we could have achieved better results with a different set of policies?..."

Minorities (dem voters) hit hardest.
The media has such a knack for renaming things now that Obama’s in office (staycation, funemployment) - maybe they’d like to replace the word poverty as well. Call it an “eating disruption” or “under the stars 24/7.”
There is no poverty in this country, you want real poverty, go to Haiti, even our poor live better than 99.9% of Haitians.
The way Dingy Harry and his commie ‘RATS are acting, America must have a severe shortage of poverty. They want to import it with “amnesty” and “dream” Acts. Something stinks here.
Bush’s fault.
You are right... As one comment says:
“I really wish we could come up with a different term for “poverty”. I have traveled to places with real poverty (e.g., Central Africa and Central America). By comparison, there is zero poverty in the US.
We would be a whole lot better off as a country if our “relatively poor” understood that they are blessed to live in a country where they are richer and better off than about 90% of the rest of the world’s population.”
And for the FYI of all, I’m the guy behind Commentopia... an ex Reader’s Digest editor (from the grand old RD days,} who tries his best to find both sides of an issue for a balanced view of so many vital issues challenging our nation.
You are so correct. Of course there are poor and cashed strapped families in this country. But as a rule there is help available from government programs, churches and other charities. The young people I know think they are deprived if they don't have a cell phone.
In my world, the third world countries with no resources are impoverished.
(What a fascinating career you must have had!)
Actually, I am sort of surprised that this information was put out there. Have you ever noticed that there is usually no discussion about homeless people, poverty etc... when a Democrat is in office. However, within a few months of a Republican getting into office, there are huge news stories about the homeless, shelters, poor etc... I am wondering if it is now a BIG problem and can’t be covered up? Just a thought
