Darren Wilson and the status quo (Up is down, night is day, etc.)
The St. Louis American ^ | November 20, 2014 | Jamala Rogers

Posted on 11/20/2014 11:56:08 PM PST by 2ndDivisionVet

In the 100-plus days since Mike Brown was gunned down by Darren Wilson, we have seen incredible incompetence and intractable racist behavior by the white power structure in the St. Louis metropolitan region. Every week since August 9 there have been acts of defiance and missed opportunities to show real leadership because of institutional racism.

As tensions mount in anticipation of the grand jury announcement, we have to ask ourselves, “Why is an entire system working so hard to protect one cop?”

We are now on the brink of the grand jury announcement with plenty of angst and fear to go around. As guns fly off the retail shelves and the mainstream media over-exaggerates the extremes on both sides, one lone fact has deliberately been clouded to divert our attention. Regardless of the circumstances (which we are still piecing together), an unarmed teen was shot down by police. Remember this.

Darren Wilson's most devoted followers seem to be mainly white folks in the law enforcement community, their families and friends. But Wilson also has white allies in high places like Prosecuting Attorney Bob McCulloch, Gov. Jay Nixon, Senator Claire McCaskill and a host of others who refused to work to create an environment of justice in this case. This is a clue to Wilson's importance.

Another group of white allies feel they have a dog in this fight – the Ku Klux Klan. The KKK has vowed to use “lethal force” against “terrorists masquerading as peaceful protestors” – a view apparently shared by the white decision-makers who have authorized the use of a militarized response to non-violent protesters. Frank Ancona, Imperial Wizard of Missouri’s KKK Chapter, has publicly boasted that Ferguson has been great for their recruitment efforts.

The need to maintain white supremacy and uphold the system is what is playing out in Ferguson. Police or the Klan (or a combo) have been instrumental in repressing and controlling those who dare challenge that system; their roles in propping up a racist system is indispensable. What used to be strange fruit hanging from Southern trees is now taking the modern form of black men and women being in the wrong place (Trayvon Martin) or making white people feel threatened (Renisha McBride).

As white allies for white supremacy align, many sectors of our society are joining in the chorus for much needed change in policing methods, court procedures and discriminatory laws. Documentation of police abuse and prosecutorial misconduct are rife. We are bombarded daily with videos of police brutality. Yet evidence of police raping, stealing and killing citizens is met with justification and resistance. The message is that the system must be protected at all costs – even if it means that the results are mistrust and hate of those we pay to insure the carriage of justice.

In Ferguson, the pillars of a racist institution are being shaken at its foundations. Those who’ve been allowed to use it as cover, no matter what they’ve done, are now feeling the heat and they will fight to the end to preserve it.

On one side are fair-minded citizens who want a society that guarantees the human and civil rights for all, not just those with the right skin color or the resources to pay for it. On the other side are those who feel like the status quo that upholds white rights must be protected at all costs.

Just like this fight has transcended the shooting of Mike Brown, it’s also bigger than Darren Wilson. Wilson was not some decorated hero in the Ferguson police force but he is now the symbol for white supremacy. What happens in this case will have huge implications in the future for the justice system, race relations and governance in our region. We will all have to answer the question posed to us in the old union song, “Which Side are You On?”

I'd hate to be defined only by the color of my skin.

Too late, FRiend, they're identifying YOU - by exactly that criterion.

Funny how they all leave out the “content of their character” bit these days

That was never serious.

If Wilson was out to gun down black males just for the heck of it, why didn’t he shoot Brown’s criminal pal Johnson too? Because Johnson did was he was told and got out of the middle of the street. Brown did not. Brown decided it was a good idea to disobey the officer and then charge and assault him as Wilson was getting out of his car. The result: a very bad ending for Brown.

Thank you for introducing me to the St. Louis American, the source of this editorial.

It is also the source of I can't stop it, because it didn't start, by Ruth-Miriam Garnett, which I shall post in its entirely here.

Ms. Garnett, before the Austin Powers quotes

Before I do, I'd ask everyone to look for the author's choice ability to turn a phrase, just as you would be asked to find certain words in a 'find-the-word' letter matrix.

"A startling development disclosed by a source launches my dialogue at present."

" will do whatever it takes to make clear my concurrence with their aims, as stated."

"We can, without contempt for the historicity of survival mechanisms that had us bowing our heads, at worst repressing rage, at best transcending it, lose the self-loathing."

Ready. Set. Go!

I have been slow to comment on the Ferguson uprising, mainly because I am a turtle, yet also because of a plethora of competent commentary extant. However, Mike Brown and Ferguson have peopled many, if not most, of my conversations. A startling development disclosed by a source launches my dialogue at present.

Apparently, a movement within a movement is afloat. It seeks to corral African Americans into voting against Democratic candidates, specifically, to spurn the incumbent county prosecutor, senator and governor in the upcoming Missouri elections. None of these officials have pushed publicly for a stringent application of the legal process with regard to the murder of a surrendering young African American by police officer Darren Wilson.

Asked to assist with prepared statements before a rally, I witnessed the bold courage and clarity of youth leaders from Ferguson. One young man stated: “We are financing our own extinction.”

Another, a working father equally articulate, stated: “I have 18 bullet holes, but I have a 12-year-old brother, who is my heart. I don’t want that to happen to him. He can be empowered through this struggle.” They get it. They’re on it. They understand what is at stake. This minimal direct contact took me a long way in my own understanding. It was clear to me also that my presence was technically unnecessary; however, I will do whatever it takes to make clear my concurrence with their aims, as stated.

On the other hand, at times, one should avoid contact with a quite specific set of acquaintances. I for one would like to know who’s got these motor scooters holding political office by the short hairs? If politics is the game in achieving justice for Mike Brown, then indeed, let’s rock and roll.

Young Ferguson residents have found the cure for the self-hatred we bequeathed to them. We should do likewise and send a strong message with our vote. We can, without contempt for the historicity of survival mechanisms that had us bowing our heads, at worst repressing rage, at best transcending it, lose the self-loathing.

Democrats drove black men from home (Moynihan). Democrats imprisoned a million black men (Clinton). The new round of lynching is aimed directly at our children. Make no mistake, they are not collateral damage; they are the target. We must protect them. Anyone who does not prioritize this cannot represent us.

Like my young friends, I wish to be bold; I wish to be brave; I wish to be clear. Let me know if you are down.

With a name like Jamala, it is easy to ID the color of her skin. Since she is so obsessed with “folks with white skin”, I think it is OK to guess she is black.

Yep, what these people dont realize is that if Wilson had indeed murdered a person in cold blood, he would NOT be getting the support he is now getting from folks like you and I, and the I AM DARREN WILSON MOVEMENT

There are bad cops out there, just that Darren Wilson is not one of them

Which is why open-carry here, once signed by Governor Abbott after he is sworn-in, is going to be a hoot! It’s going to look like the set of a Hollywood Western.

“Why is an entire system working to protect one cop?”

Um, perhaps because of the principle of innocent until proven guilty?

The author wants a racist lynching of Mike Brown.

Unarmed Mike Brown. He had his name posthumously changed.
