I could only support drug legalization under three conditions:
1. No social benefits of any sort goes to fund or support the people using such drugs. This would be similar to an employer not hiring someone because of their drug use.
2. All crimes committed while under the influence of a voluntarily taken recreational drug are considered premeditated.
3. A torture penalty is enacted that prescribes three times the torture back to whatever somebody under such influence provided another.
There is no "gray area" on issues. Everything is black or white when all information is known. It is our distance from a circumstance or issue that makes something appear gray. In reality, what appears gray is due to what I call the Halftone Effect. Look at a picture in the newspaper. It appears to have gray tones, but there is no gray--it is your distance from it that makes your eyes lie to you. Get closer. Do you see that there is only black ink and white paper? This is how everything that is right or wrong is made gray. When you see the reality of it, there is only one right answer and only one color to stand on.
See things from both sides, but choose the right side.

Hit tip to Perfect_Rovian_Storm: "The worst is behind us. Unfortunately it is really well endowed."
From "conservatism_is_compassion" on Aug 23, 2009:
Unless that imbalance is reduced, all but a few quality papers will disappear. For its part, Congress needs to move quickly to grant the newspaper industry at least a temporary exemption from antitrust and price-fixing laws so that publishers and proprietors can, in essence, collude for survival.
The problem is precisely that they already do collude. They are members of the Associated Press and other wire services, and that membership is what provides the motive and the cover for them all to agree never to criticize each other on the basis of "objectivity." That is what produces the monochromatic leftist perspective in all of journalism. And that means that, far from representing we-the-people, our "free" press represents itself and those who politically go along and get along with the leftist perspective of journalism. It is only natural that journalists would promote themselves, and only natural that they would take the easy way of doing so - which is to criticize their betters. Anyone who takes responsibility to get things done - businessmen, policemen, the military - is their natural target. And anyone who joins in the criticism and second guessing of the responsible people - unions, other journalists, plaintiff lawyers, and socialist politicians - is the journalist's natural ally.
In claiming to be "the press," journalists effectively claim to be our representatives to the government. But that of course is a bitter joke - they represent themselves first, their natural allies second, and "conservatives" such as you and me not at all. When with Al Gore they pledge to "fight for you," they are pledging to fight against you and me. Their fight is against the only memory which the government is actually supposed to have toward its citizens - the memory of the credit which each of us individually is due which resides in our ownership of things we have worked and saved for. That memory is what the government exists to nurture and protect, and that memory is what the socialist is committed to erasing. Leaving the old without the ability to call in the fruits of his/her savings and investments against the infirmities of age, and leaving the young without any incentive to try to do likewise. And this the government accomplishes by the mere "virtuous" act of giving to others what we ourselves had to work and save for, leaving the young without incentive to serve the old in exchange for the fruits of the savings of the mature.
It is a recipe for the impoverishment of society, and it has worked every place it has been tried.
How a large number of FReepers test anothers conservatism (borrowed from a T Minus Four post):
I was walking across a bridge one day, and I saw a man standing on the edge, about to jump off. So I ran over and said, Stop! Dont do it! Why shouldnt I? he said.
I said, Well, theres so much to live for! He said, Like what? I said, Well, are you religious or atheist? He said, Religious. I said, Me too!
Are you Christian or Buddhist? He said, Christian. I said, Me too!
Are you Catholic or Protestant? He said, Protestant. I said, Me too!
Are you Episcopalian or Baptist? He said, Baptist! I said, Wow! Me too!
Are you Baptist Church of God or Baptist Church of the Lord? He said, Baptist Church of God! I said, Me too!
Are you Original Baptist Church of God or are you Reformed Baptist Church of God? He said, Reformed Baptist Church of God! I said, Me too!
Are you Reformed Baptist Church of God, Reformation of 1879, or Reformed Baptist Church of God, Reformation of 1915? He said, Reformed Baptist Church of God, Reformation of 1915!
I said, Die, heretic scum! and pushed him off.
If a conservative doesnt like guns, he doesnt buy one. If a liberal doesnt like guns, he wants all guns outlawed.
If a conservative is a vegetarian, he doesn`t eat meat. If a liberal is a vegetarian, he wants all meat products banned for everyone.
If a conservative is homosexual, he quietly leads his life. If a liberal is homosexual, he demands legislated respect.
If a conservative is down-and-out, he thinks about how to better his situation. A liberal wonders who is going to take care of him.
If a conservative doesnt like a talk show host, he switches channels. Liberals demand that those they dont like be shut down.
If a conservative is a non-believer, he doesnt go to church. A liberal non-believer wants any mention of God and religion silenced.(Unless its a foreign religion, of course!)
If a conservative decides he needs health care, he goes about shopping for it, or may choose a job that provides it. A liberal demands that the rest of us pay for his.
