[history]
Most commentators have been telling us for weeks that the United States has little capability to fight a war against terrorism and that attacking Osama bin Laden and his supporters in Afghanistan will lead to the same disasters that befell the Soviets in the 1980s and the British a century earlier. They say this war is completely different from the Persian Gulf War and that our high-tech weapons will be of little value.

Yet more proof that terrorists put their pants on one leg at a time, and that we are more capable than many give us credit for being.

Sanity is starting to return. Good post. It is never bad to overestimate the capabilities of an enemy as long as it does not lead to paralysis. The terrorists can be defeated, and will be as long as we have the resolve.

Pants? Osama wears a DRESS! Well, he wears pants when he is in the U.S.
What? You say he has never been in the U.S.? Well, his suicide bullyboys, then -- they wear pants when they are in the U.S.
Hmmmm . . . . never been in the U.S. . . . Think maybe that contributed to the bad mistake he made underestimating U.S. resolve and determination?

Most commentators have been telling us for weeks that the United States has little capability to fight a war against terrorism and that attacking Osama bin Laden and his supporters in Afghanistan will lead to the same disasters that befell . . . yada yada yada I know what pundits he is talking about and I've yet to hear one offer a suggested alternative. By implication, their alternative is that we should give in to terrorists demands. Everytime I hear this tommyrot, my reaction is "It may be tough, but the consequences of appeasement are worse still."

Good post. I just want to add that penetrating the "inner ring" require INTELLIGENCE work, the old fashioned "man inside". Not having this proved to be a crucial mistake - all this terrorist organizations are based (at the innerrings-decison rings) on 2 man cells that don't have no connections between - the order come from the most inner ring and is spread downwards until it reaches people like Atta. Bombers and special forces will not do it - at the end somebody need to have "loose lips". These people (the decision making ring) are well educated and take full advantage of whatever technology, communications and the financial system have to offer. Don't be foul by the "cave setting" of Bin Laden and his message - free the holy land, free the Palestine from the infidels. He wants MUCH more - the green flag of the Prophet to wave instead of Star and Stripes.

If we only have the fortitude on the home front to back our military for as long as it takes, then we will get Bin Laden eventually. If we can weaken his organization sufficiently over a period of time, which is what we are doing right now, we will increasingly shake the confidence of his followers, and someone will finally sell him out in the end, if nothing else. What counts is our resolve as a nation. It's starting out quite strong (according to the "POLLS," and people say they will support several years worth of military efforts. No one knows how long this will take. But, if we stick with our efforts, we will get Bin Laden. It's a question of time and resolve.

We cover systems theory as applied to business organizations and supply chains in my classes. I am going to show my classes this piece about systems theory as applied to warfare. It might convince more students that these ideas are really used in the real world.
I am glad to see this article.

I have this mental picture of GW meeting with his advisors on 9/11 and saying something like, "Okay guys, we have to defeat an unspecific enemy, in an unspecific location, with unspecific resources, whose only point of clarity is in their emnity towards the US."
This is a problem of great magnitude, but often such complex problems have relatively simple answers. Not only do we have to increase our internal security, but we have to propegate the idea around the world that this form of conflict is anametha. If they have no support, they will shrivel up and die.
It would be a good idea at this point to attack another country (Iraq or Sudan comes to mind) and simultaneously release enough "evidence" to connect them to supporting terrorists, not necessarily directly related to 9/11. Make the point crystal clear that this type of activity will not be allowed.
Watch how fast other nations distance themselves from these groups...

It would be a good idea at this point to attack another country (Iraq or Sudan comes to mind) My bet is that their turn comes up after the Taliban go down. Ever play the game Civilization? Always try and fight only one enemy at a time. Always get as many allies as you can in each fight. Bush looks to be doing just that. . . .

Al Qaeda terrorists find Bin Laden's body. His head has been mounted on a pole and has been replaced on the body by a pig's head, thereby guaranteeing that the terrorist mastermind will not go to Islamic heaven
