The Terminator trips up
By Ellen Goodman, 9/28/2003

UH OH, Arnold. What happened to the "Oprah" strategy? Wasn't that you sitting on Winfrey's sofa a couple of weeks ago talking about family? And weren't you the guy who bragged that he loved to shop for his wife? Weren't you test-driving the newer, softer you to woo women voters all over the left coast? ....

LA Times: National Conservative Leaders Add Momentum and Money to McClintock Campaign

McClintock For Governor ^ | 9/28/03 | By Daryl Kelley and Megan Garvey, Times Staff Writers
Posted on 09/28/2003 12:45 PM PDT by GrandMoM
Edited on 09/28/2003 12:49 PM PDT by Admin Moderator. [history]

Despite calls from California Republicans for him to drop out of the governor's race, some say he has a future as a conservative leader.

Even as more California conservative leaders publicly call on him to clear the way for Arnold Schwarzenegger, state Sen. Tom McClintock has gained a national following.

Little known outside the state until now, McClintock has struck a chord with the right wing of the Republican Party nationwide with his frank presentation of his point of view — anti-tax, anti-big government, anti-abortion, anti-gun control, anti-illegal immigration, anti-gay marriage....

Why would McClintock risk handing the governorship to the most liberal Democratic candidate on the ballot? The answer is revenge — an irrational emotion in politics that often trumps all others. McClintock is getting even....

McClintock stands out for pro-family voters

Save California ^
Posted on 09/28/2003 2:43 PM PDT by GrandMoM

Tom McClintock has served nearly 20 years in the California State Legislature. First as an assemblyman and now as a state senator, McClintock is widely-acknowledged as being "the taxpayers' best friend and the bureaucrats' worst nightmare." Pro-life and pro-family, Tom McClintock is the only major candidate for Governor who has signed the Marriage Protection Pledge. Bustamante, Schwarzenegger, Davis, Camejo and Huffington have all refused.

With a respectable pro-family voting record, Tom McClintock has earned the support of Save California. California families desperately need their parental rights and basic moral values protected. We believe as Governor of California, Tom McClintock would veto anti-family bills that reach his desk....

McClinton Sticks to Calif. Recall Race By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
Published: September 28, 2003
Filed at 6:48 p.m. ET

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- With little more than a week left in California's recall race, Arnold Schwarzenegger is trying to make his victory seem inevitable. But his more conservative Republican rival isn't going away.

State Sen. Tom McClintock has stuck firmly -- some say obstinately -- to his pledge to race to the end, even at the risk of splitting the Republican vote and allowing Democrats to stay in power even if Gov. Gray Davis is recalled....

Vote 'no' on the recall ... ... and yes to Schwarzenegger (Oakland Tribune Editorial)

Oakland Tribune ^ | 9/28/03 | Oakland Tribune Editorial

Vote 'no' on the recall ...

THREE months ago, as petitioners closed in on the 900,000 signatures needed to put the recall of Gray Davis on the ballot, we urged our readers not to sign the papers because the case for removing the two-term governor from office "hasn't been made." It still hasn't. And, even though we have many misgivings about Davis' years in California's highest office, we don't think he deserves to be tossed out on his ear, for several reasons: ....

DAVIS & CLINTON: A PERFECT PAIR -- Definining Illegality Down

It is one thing to change immigration policies to allow more people into the United States legally, a move I would support in principle (though the implementation is admittedly complicated by security risks). But it is quite another to outlaw people coming to the United States with the left hand and then to reward those who have broken this law with the right.

Such hypocrisy breaks down any sense citizens have that the country's laws are meaningful and deserving of respect. If the government isn't overly concerned about people violating its directives, then how important can the directives really be? How much moral weight can they possibly hold? And why bother following them (and perhaps other laws you don't like) in the first place? .......

California: Arnold's the one (for a tax increase)

Sacramento Bee, Recall Fly on the Wall Weblog ^ | September 28, 2003 | Mark Paul
Posted on 09/28/2003 5:07 PM PDT by John Jorsett

On Question 2 – who should replace Gray Davis if he's removed – the problem is that the candidate who's right for the job can't win and the candidates who can win haven't shown they are equal to the job.

If I thought the recall was certain to fail, I would recommend Garrett Gruener, the venture capitalist and founder of Ask Jeeves, the Internet search engine. As I wrote in my column two weeks ago, he's the real outsider and grown-up in the race. He's been honest and realistic about the state's budget woes, he knows how jobs and wealth are created in California and he has put forward the only interesting new ideas about education in this campaign. Look at the videos on his website and you'll cry that he wasn't allowed on the debates to challenge the empty slogans of the "major" candidates....

Arnold Schwarzenegger will be in town Sunday just long enough to smile for the cameras and hand out T-shirts, his campaign announced Thursday.

As all the major gubernatorial candidates begin their efforts to increase turnout at the polls on Election Day, Schwarzenegger on Sunday will fly across California, stopping from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Monterey Jet Center....

Election hijackers don't exist
By Bill McEwen
The Fresno Bee
Published 09/28/03 05:10:11

Someone needs to stick up for Tom McClintock's decision to stay in the recall election and it might as well be me, a registered voter whose views often are miles to the left of the conservative state senator.
This isn't a subterfuge to siphon votes from Arnold Schwarzenegger, although some readers might see it that way.

My goal is to dispel the myth of hijacked elections and put responsibility for what happens Oct. 7 where it belongs -- in the hands of California voters.

For weeks now, McClintock has been told to do the math by fellow Republicans aligned with Schwarzenegger. They want McClintock to quit the race because the polls indicate he has little chance of winning....

California FREEPers: Will a Republican Gov Help Bush Make Your State Competitive?

FREEPers Everywhere! ^ | 9/28/03 | Recovering_Democrat
Posted on 09/28/2003 5:25 PM PDT by Recovering_Democrat

Drudge is headlining a poll showing a likely Republican victory in California's recall. I don't want to rehash the Arnold/McClintock debate here...my real question, to all thinking FREEPers but especially you California ones, is this:

Will a Republican governor, in your opinion, help the President make the state competitive again, or will it still be a slam dunk Democrat state--like New York? All things being equal, of course....

McClintock's heading into a hard decision this week.

McClintock's voters are all strong Republicans, the strongest supporters being the Pro-Life voters....

LIEUTENANT GOVERNOR (Bustamante) SEEKS ENDORSEMENT (From Davis)

Mercury News ^ | 9/28/03 | Laura Kurtzman and Dawn C. Chmielewski

LOS ANGELES - Lt. Gov. Cruz Bustamante sought the endorsement of Gov. Gray Davis on Saturday and said he hoped the two would soon be campaigning together, a day after the Davis campaign publicly discounted Bustamante's chances of prevailing in the Oct. 7 recall election.

Bustamante made his remarks after being asked if his candidacy was hurting the Democrats' chances of beating the recall. The lieutenant governor dodged the question and said instead that he hoped the governor would publicly support him....
