Long Beach Press-Telegram Editorial: "Recall Davis, elect Arnold"

Long Beach Press-Telegram ^ | 9-28 | Long Beach Press-Telegram

Oct. 7: Schwarzenegger has the right ideas to begin repairing California.

Saturday, September 27, 2003 - Gov. Gray Davis is a career government bureaucrat who ascended too high. His shameless pandering to campaign contributors, obsessive micromanagement and extreme timidity toward any type of risk- taking served him well on his rise to the top, in various No. 2 positions, but those same qualities proved disastrous once Davis was elected to govern, a job that requires leadership....

Davis: "Stoic Man amid Recall Storm". WashPost

Washington Post ^ | 9/29/03 | David Broder
Posted on 09/28/2003 3:32 AM PDT by Timeout

Broder, the so-called "dean" of Washington journalists, focuses on Davis' personality as the source of his problems. Interestingly, he traces the problem to Davis's growing up as "the oldest child of an abusive, alcoholic father".

But some political insiders believe that growing up as the oldest child of an alcoholic father had scarred Davis's personality in ways that have been politically costly. They say that the emotional coldness, distrust of others, avoidance of conflict and relentless self-discipline displayed by Davis are characteristic of adult children of alcoholics.

These are exactly the opposite of the characteristics the press said resulted from Clinton's childhood experiences. Emotional coldness (Clinton is overly emotional). Distrust of others (OK maybe that one applies). Avoidance of conflict (If there is no conflict, Clinton will create it...he thrives on it.) Self-discipline (Ha Ha Ha!)....

As Recall Vote Nears, Davis Goes on Offensive

New York Times ^ | September 28, 2003 | DEAN E. MURPHY

SACRAMENTO, Sept. 26 — Senator Dianne Feinstein was asked last month why she supported Gov. Gray Davis in his recall fight, when a decade ago Mr. Davis compared her to the jailed tax evader Leona Helmsley in a widely criticized campaign commercial.

"Lesson learned," Senator Feinstein said of Mr. Davis on the NBC News program "Meet the Press." Pressed further, she added: "I hope so. I believe so." ....

California: Radio waves: Talk show host [Roger Hedgecock] pushed early for recall

Sacramento Bee ^ | September 28,m 2003 | Marjie Lundstrom

SAN DIEGO -- Roger Hedgecock has just finished subbing for Rush Limbaugh -- heady stuff for a conservative radio talk-show host -- but now he's turning back to the business at hand: Firing up listeners for the Oct. 7 recall election.

"I'm going to take abuse today," says San Diego's KOGO-AM radio host, who told his audience the day before that he's backing Arnold Schwarzenegger, a declaration he knows will infuriate devoted Tom McClintock listeners. "Big-time abuse." ....

California: Self-styled ordinary guy [Bustamante] reaching for new goal

Sacramento Bee ^ | September 28, 2003 | Aurelio Rojas
Posted on 09/28/2003 6:34 AM PDT by John Jorsett

Toiling in the fields of the San Joaquin Valley as a youth, Cruz Bustamante learned how to wield a hoe and thin a row of cotton.

A year in a community college program for apprentice butchers taught him to appreciate a lean cut of meat.

"I'd been on a jackhammer for about two weeks, busting cement, when I got a call from my dad who said, 'Hey, would you like to be an intern in Washington?' " Bustamante said of his first foray into politics.

California's balding, beefy lieutenant governor cultivates the image of an "ordinary guy." He holds himself out as proof that America is the land of the possible....

California: Recall options market moving to Arnold

Dan Weintraub Weblog ^ | September 27, 2003 | Dan Weintraub
Posted on 09/28/2003 6:43 AM PDT by John Jorsett

From time to time during this campaign we have checked in with the betting at TradeSports.com, where you can buy futures contracts on the recall and the race to replace. In the latest trading, “recall fails” has dropped from 42 to 23 on a scale of 0-to-100 in just the past few days. A contract on Arnold to win has climbed from 34 to 56. And a contract for Cruz to win has fallen from 31 to 23. McClintock to win: 1.7. The way these contracts work is that you buy them on the trading block at a price set by the market, and if your pick wins, you get back 100. If your pick loses, you get nothing. Caveat: while there are 14,000 of these contracts in circulation, daily trading is quite light and might be subject to manipulation....

California: Republican Party directors call emergency meeting

Dan Weintraub Weblog ^ | September 27, 2003 | Dan Weintraub
Posted on 09/28/2003 6:47 AM PDT by John Jorsett

The California Republican Party has scheduled an emergency board of directors meeting for Monday at 1 p.m. in Burbank to consider endorsing a candidate in the recall replacement election. It's clear that at least some of the directors want the party to go on record endorsing Arnold. Once again, this bullying of McClintock strikes me as futile. Unless he has sent a signal that he would withdraw if the pary directors endorse Arnold, I don't see how this will change anything, other than to give McClintock one more "backroom deal" to rail against and give his supporters one more reason to consider him a hero. Then again, with Arnold and Cruz running neck-and-neck, if Arnold can somehow take half or more of the 15 percent to 18 percent now backing McClintock, it might provide the margin of victory. I'm just not a fan of political parties, especially when they act this way, so I have a natural adverse reaction to this sort of thing. I still think Arnold gets those votes anyway on Election Day, but doing it this way further polarizes the race and makes it tougher for him to win crossover and independent votes....

Simplifying the choices for the conservative voter
By STEVEN GREENHUT

It's back.

After a short hiatus, courtesy of three activist judges on the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, the California gubernatorial recall election is on schedule again for Oct. 7. The court's 11-member panel rebuked the smaller panel, finding no compelling reason to interfere in a state election. The idea that punch-card ballots are too inaccurate to use even though they have been used in this state for decades was too much even for this court. Often, the lunatics run the asylum in California, but occasionally the adults retake control. Here, fortunately, is one of those cases....

Recall down to a Schwarzenegger-Davis duel

San Francisco Chronicle ^ | September 28, 2003 | Phillip Matier, Andrew Ross
Posted on 09/28/2003 7:41 AM PDT by Dog Gone

Forget the Cruz Bustamante "fallback strategy" or the long list of other candidates -- when all is said and done, the recall race is coming down to a face-off between Gov. Gray Davis and Republican Arnold Schwarzenegger, internal tracking polls show.

Either Davis saves his job -- or voters fire him and give the keys to the governor's office to Schwarzenegger.

And it's looking like the race may be decided by a small -- but potent -- number of disaffected Democrats.

Here's why:

Overnight polls taken statewide since Wednesday night's rollicking debate show that contrary to many pundits' conclusions, Schwarzenegger's barb-driven performance didn't hurt him with voters. Far from it.

Lt. Gov. Bustamante, on the other hand, continued his slide -- with overnight tracking showing 50 percent of those surveyed now having an unfavorable opinion of him.

One overnight poll commissioned by a Democratic-leaning union -- one of the state's biggest -- had it this way:

-- Schwarzenegger at 31 percent.

-- Bustamante at 24 percent.

-- Tom McClintock at 15 percent.

-- Peter Camejo at 4 percent.

-- Arianna Huffington at 3 percent.

And 23 percent were still undecided or voting for one of the other 130 people on the ballot.

In other words -- Arnold is No. 1, even with rival Republican McClintock staying in the race....

California: Questions re Cruz's schooling, rental home

Dan Weintraub Weblog ^ | September 28, 2003 | Dan Weintraub
Posted on 09/28/2003 8:28 AM PDT by John Jorsett

While everybody is bracing for late dirt on Arnold, two California papers today dish out some late dirt on Cruz:

The Fresno Bee reports that Bustamante, who completed his college degree late in life, was given preferential treatment by getting credit for a speech class he never attended. Cruz got the credit after a professor reviewed his public speeches for a few minutes and determined that he would get at least a “C” in the class if he were required to attend.

And the LA Times reports on Bustamante’s rental property and suggests strongly that he might have used it to improperly reduce his taxes. The home, which he rents through a federally subsidized program for low-income people, has also failed several inspections, the Times reports....

Last week Arnold Schwarzenegger proclaimed his desire for greater openness in politics. "We need to throw open the doors and windows of government," he said. At the same time, however, Mr. Schwarzenegger has forced his campaign staff to sign strict confidentiality agreements. Under threat of termination, staff members must agree not to disclose information about "Arnold Schwarzenegger and his family, friends, associates and employees." The policy, first described in The Los Angeles Times, stipulates that Mr. Schwarzenegger can obtain an injunction against anyone trying to break it and a fine of $50,000 per violation....
