Villagers from the Tatra mountains in traditional dress sing and pray during a Mass celebrated by Pope John Paul II in Roznava, eastern Slovakia, Saturday. (AP/Diether Endlicher)

the pope should retire. i know it's unprecedented, but in his condition, it would really be time to pass the title on.

Why, he's still a great witness. Most of the early popes were martyred.

I know I feel sorry for him.
My husband's grandmother, whom I dearly loved, was in similar shape for ten long years. It was just a terrible thing to see her suffer so much. It's as hard as seeing a little child suffer--she had little understanding of who she was or where she was, but her pain and confusion were just as intense as they are for the non-senile.
We prayed for her release from her suffering, and it came...when a doctor interpreted a DNR order as a "let her IV fluids be surreptitiously turned off" order. She died of heart and kidney failure from dehydration. I still wonder if God will count it as murder or not.

Death by dehydration is a horrible thing. Providing water can hardly be considered extraordinary measures. Yes, I say it was murder.

Nearing the end of a gruelling four-day pilgrimage, the 83-year-old Pope often slumped in his chair, slurred his words and lost his place in the text. But he made it through the 2½-hour service. Sorry to hear that. I guess we are witnessing his last days.

So you prayed for homicide to be committed???? Frightening. Glad I'm not your friend or family.

You're an ass. Of course not. We prayed for her to be released from her suffering by God--and her suffering was huge. There was no way to prove anything that happened--she WAS dying. Had there been any way to prove that the doctor turned her IV off on purpose we would have pursued it.
What a twisted thing to say. I loved her.
