Not only do I remember when innards were NOT in plastic pouches, I rememeber when fowl wasn't cleaned as thoroughly as they are today, and one had to pluck out the pinfeathers with a speacial tool; sort of a tweezer gizmo. LOL
I was taught how to pull dough, but I was so tiny, that I had to kneel on a chair. Mostly though, I just sat and watched and absorbed how things were done/what they smelled and looked like. I can remember being around 3 and thinking that cooking was " MAGIC ". Good food IS "magic ".
What a wonderful Aunt you had. I'm sure that that cherished apron was worn, by you, with pride and a great deal of happiness.

since I moved to TX, I've come to enjoy brisket, but I sure do miss pork BBQ, that special vinegar hot sauce, and red slaw...

My daddy still keeps the bacon grease on the stove in a coffee can. My mom does too.

I miss VA too... not the commonwealth, but the land. I grew up right outside of richmond (Chester) myself.
each part has it's own beauty though... I love Northern VAs rolling hills, western/west VA for the mountains, tidewater for its rich history, and even the VA beach/Norfolk area is great.

"Shorty McWilliams was a major league football stud. Wasn't he one of the few if not the only players in NCAA history to be a 2-time All-American for 2 different teams (Army and MS State)?Yes, he was. After reading your post, I did a little research on him. I learned things I never knew.
The reason I find this all so strange is that he lived around the corner from me, and his girls were all around my age (older and younger, and I knew them all).
I knew he was a former football player, but I didn't know he was so accomplished.

"This page is not available."Oh, no! I hope you didn't look too hard for this song, which is a wonderful song BTW. Your hubby has great taste in music.
Thanks for taking the trouble to "hunt" for it. ;o)

My mom had a store bought aluminum canister with "grease" imbossed on the side. There were salt and pepper canisters that completeted that set.
