Some how I suspect there is going to be some bad electrical storms over Alabama tonight

Right after those hurricanes and meteors come down on Disney World.

Exo 20:7 Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain; for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.

"Everyone must submit himself to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. Consequently, he who rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves." -- Romans 13:1-2

In all seriousness, my favorite thread on FR recently was the one earlier today where I was being accused of being a "backstabber" because there were FReepers out at this courthouse in Alabama and I was on here blasting this charade. I was trying to explain that I was actually a "cheststabber" since I was never on these people's side of this to begin with. But I guess I wasn't throwing in enough "dig dag dad gum dog gone jibber jabber Communisses" to be understood.

Then all those Nazis who defending themselves at Nuremburg saying they were just following the government's orders were right! Dang! I thought it was a good thing to disobey illegal or unjust laws. So the slave catchers and stuff were good, religious guys then.

It's a curious issue. I don't understand why people feel their faith is threatened if the State doesn't endorse it. As someone who wants to see the State have less rather than more power, I can't understand why anyone on FR would have a principled reason for wanting the state throw it's weight in one direction or the other.

There are Christians all over Europe who manage to be devout in their faith without feeling undermined by the limited role their governments take in this arena.

Nope... as you know the Apostle Paul was ultimately a law-breaker himself. But he was speaking to his friends in Rome who were seeking to rebel simply for the sake of rebelling. No law or ruling denies one single person in Alabama to practice their religion. If so, I would fully support the Judge and the protesters. But that ain't happening. This is all about pride.

Problem: Let's say half the country has different values than you and sooner or later some of them sit on State and Federal courts. Is your position that it's perfectly OK in principle for liberal judges to ignore the law if they feel it's unjust and that the only problem is that you disagree with them about the application of that principle in particular cases?

Oh, didn't know that god did storms over areas that fundies thought weren't christian enough.

Remove them, they shouldn't be there, its just a fundie stunt to raise money.

Yeah, I'm a heathen, get over it.

Funny that guarding a big block of stone, which is rather ugly aesthetically-speaking, is now the same as saving German Jews and American slaves. Like I say, this is all about pride... and scoring celestial bonus points (or at least, thinking one is).

Just one more reason that so many I see on FR are not true conservatives. They don't support the rule of law (this is an area where conservatism has always taken the higher ground over leftist "progressivism"), many here are openly hostile to capitalism (it's all about evil CEOs shafting the "little man", you know), and on and on.

It runs much deeper than that. Many people apparently think a government is illegitimate if it does not explicitly endorse some weakest-common-denominator Christianity.

I think that is extremely dangerous.

And it's ironic too ... since GW Bush, beloved leader of Christian conservatives, is trying to sell the idea of a non-sectarian democracy abroad.

I'm a born-again, evangelical Christian, and I say, "Right on!" You are absolutely right in your assessment of this circus.

The hypocricy is mind-boggling at times, particularly when it's wrapped in a self-righteous piety.

GW Bush, for all the cries about him being a fundamentalist (or whatever), is very rational about all this. His own nominee to the federal courts, William Pryor, has come out against this silliness as well. I am an evangelical Christian and 100% against this. It promotes our faith in no way whatsoever. It's all about some pride-filled people doing something to feel better about themselves.

Strange bedfellows, and the most unexpected response I could expect!

The pastor had people film the making of the stone block, and the late night non-permitted placement of the block, then they sold the video.

Hucksterism, and a terrible way to profit off the 10 commandments (which version?)

Glad to be Catholic, we drink beer and gamble (BINGO!) every friday night...damn nuns seemed to always win...hmmm...
