So sorry to bring that up in a case where your loved one had an amputation. Please forgive me.
Each state probably are different in their rules, and possibly some people refuse the limbs, or the patient has no family to give their limb too.
I hope I didn't upset you, but things behind the scenes in hospitals aren't always perfect.

When I got out of service in '73 the first thing my mother (!) said about me was that I'd 'turned cold'.
Still seeped in WW2 and the boom that followed, she still today cannot understand that our experiences left us with differing demeanor (sp?)
Local police used similar logic a few years later when a lady I dated was raped; 'not the way I'd act, ergo guilty'.
At least the cops figured out that they were wrong.
I do not defend S. Peterson, nor to I idolize his in-laws.
What I'd like to do is point out to anyone willing to listen that our judicial system should not be based on one's beady little eyes, lousy sense of humor, or for that matter- sanity. It should be based on proof of guilt beyond a reasonable doubt - did this person, for whatever reason, do this crime?
It is way too early for that - not to mention this being the wrong forum.

Actually, we can all laugh about it now, we were asked to drive around to the side of the hospital, where no joke, we drove off with Dad's leg in the trunk. There is a family plot and we did "bury" the leg. That's the good part of living in a small country town.

LOL! Seems like we never learn--or at least, *I* never seem to learn that they are overhyping everything!
OTOH, I heard that 9/11 was happening on the radio, didn't believe it was more than a tragic accident, clicked onto Drudge, saw in big red letters "AMERICA ATTACKED", and still didn't believe it until I finally got to the TV and started watching it happen with my own eyes!
