Iraq was likely the real force behind 9/11. AQ seems to be able to only muster loading a truck or a car or a boat with explosives and blowing it up. Not that something like that isn't serious, but the idea that they could move from that to a WMD attack against three major US cities is a stretch.

Thanks for posting Sec. Ridge's comments. I got this via email (relative works for a Fed agency) and found it to have some helpful advice. I do think we should all be alert and aware. But what are we looking for? This is what DHS says:

Vehicle Bombs (method du jour of AQ):
The existence of any one of the following indicators does not in and of
itself suggest terrorist activity. But it should be reported so it can be assessed with other information present to judge whether there is
cause for further investigation:

a.. Theft of explosives, blasting caps, or fuses, or certain chemicals
used in the manufacture of explosives.
b.. Rental of self-storage space for the purpose of storing chemicals or
mixing apparatus.
c.. Delivery of chemicals directly to a self-storage facility or unusual
deliveries of chemicals to residential or rural addresses.
d.. Chemical fires, toxic odors, brightly colored stains, or rusted metal
fixtures in apartments, hotel/motel rooms, or self-storage units.
e.. Rental, theft, or purchase of truck or van with minimum (1) ton
carrying capacity.
f.. Modification of truck or van with heavy duty springs to handle
heavier loads.
g.. Small test explosions in rural wooded areas.
h.. Treatment of chemical burns or missing hands/fingers.
i.. Untreated chemical burns or missing hands/fingers.

Also, surveillance of possible targets -- even by such seemingly innocent types as street vendors, cab drivers, etc. -- either over an extended period of time or serially, for short periods over several days.

Forgive my ignorance but I don't live in the States. What are people supposed to do at the various threat levels? For instance, what are people supposed to do now with this High/Orange alert?

Jokes aside, could be something planned for the holiday weekend. Seeing as how I'm broke anyway (nothing new there), I think I'll spend the weekend up in the mountians at a friends cabin (heavily armed of course).

I've got a pistol in my pocket and the Glock 34 on the passenger seat. The carbine is in the back.

I was out shooting IDPA scenarios last night at the wildlife club. I got to thinking that one good thing is that the peace loving islamists have no place to practice or train in the USA (without someone dropping a dime on them).

Execellent! It's high time EVERYONE armed themselves and be alert and ready for anything. I go nowhere without my S&W 686 .357, I used to keep my AR-10 A2 in the car but was worried about it being stolen so I keep that locked up at home now.

I was down in Arlington yesterday in a high-rise building. Was watching all the jets coming and going out of Reagan Nat'l Airport. Didn't know the threat level was bumped to HIGH until I got home. Luckily, today I was able to telecommute and get the rest of the servers set up.

I hate to be a chicken, but I'm not going anywhere near DC anytime soon. I feel bad for all the people who have no choice but to go. They are braver than I am.

Pray for the best. Prepare for the worst.
