In other words, a typical Wlat non-response. Refusal to trade black POW's does not by necessity make one a proponent of slavery, especially when doing so is fulfilling a policy rather than making one's own judgment. Lee had power to do pretty much what he wanted.
There is nothing at all in Lee's writings or action to supoprt any other interpretation that he was as intersted in preserving the domestic institution of the south as anyone was.
Lincoln is lambasted for suggesting the blacks be colonized out of the country (although he later favored them having the rights of citizens) but the slavers are held up as paragons of virtue.
A funny thing strikes me about the way the slave holders are treated on FR by the neo-rebs. It is seldom suggested that the slave holders be considered in the context of their day and excused for their inhuman attitudes on that basis. This exposes the true attitudes of the current day neo-confederates. They feel that there is nothing at all wrong with slavery even today.
They DO feel the need to dance around and euphemize it.
It does explain why they vilify Lincoln and praise Lee.

Thanks. I was getting a headache reading all of the remarks and it was great medicine for me, better than an aspirin.
I see why you liked it !!

"They feel that there is nothing at all wrong with slavery even today."You know full well that that is a damned lie, WaltWalt. But lying makes you feel good, doesn't it.
To: WhiskeyPapa
"They had one of their talking head scholars noting that the ACW{sic)
really started with the Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854. Over two hundred people were killed in "Bleeding Kansas" prior to 1860. And it wasn't over tariffs."The bloodshed was initiated by John Brown. Brown, like you, Walt, seemed to be driven mostly by hatred, although Brown also had a stong lust for killing. He affected a moral revulsion for slavery to provide himself a justification for indulging his hatred and homocidal urges. He was encouraged and financed by six, probably mentally disturbed, radical New England abolitionists (The Secret Six):
Thomas Wentworth Higginson, Gerrit Smith, Reverend Theodore Parker,Dr. Samuel Gridley Howe,George Luther Stearns, Franklin Sanborn
This was the cause of "Bleeding Kansas". It wasn't about tariffs and it wasn't about slavery. It was the unfortunate result of the coming together of seven criminally insane men and their common acting out of their megalomaniacal and/or homicidal fantasies.
"Now it's always dicey to trust what one hears on the HC. But this stands up pretty well."
Because it supports what you want to believe.

In other words, another Wlat non-response that has nothing to do with the issue of whether or not the Morrill Act was protectionist.
To: WhiskeyPapa
There is nothing at all in Lee's writings or action to supoprt any other interpretation that he was as intersted in preserving the domestic institution of the south as anyone was. Then I guess those letters where he longed for its abolition and the one where he proposed a plan of emancipation don't mean anything, do they.
They feel that there is nothing at all wrong with slavery even today.
I don't believe you could find a single person anywhere on this forum that holds such a belief, Walt. That makes your characterization a lie. On the other hand, one could find individuals who feel that there is nothing wrong with the murder of innocent civilians both then and today. You would almost certainly qualify in that group.

Lee
Robert E. Lee epitomizes nobility of character. To many, his name inspires awe. He represents the personal standards to which Scouts aspire. And it was his tragedy to lend his virtues and talents to an unjust cause.
The news from the Robert E. Lee Council of the Boy Scouts of America is the latest chapter in an argument in which the well-intended on both sides stake compelling claims. Those who cherish Lee and the stan- dards he represents draw the community's attention to humility and decency. Their pride cannot be questioned. Nor is it possible to dismiss or ridicule those who see homages to Lee as symbols of the indefensible. The Confederacy simply cannot be separated from slavery.
Lee loved Virginia. He could not take up arms against his land. The bondsman was not free to make a similar choice. If Lee's armies had won, many more years would have passed before emancipation. Victory by the Army of Northern Virginia would have extended slavery.
The many decades after the war cannot be separated from an era in which many who claimed Lee's spiritual inheritance imposed Jim Crow - i.e., segregation enforced by a powerful, merciless state. Human rights were sacrificed to the false idols of states' rights.
If Lee had personified evil, there would be no debate. If he had commanded U.S. troops on D-Day, there would be no debate, either. He was a good man who, when hit by history's freight train, went the wrong way. Yet when silence fell at Appomattox, he conducted himself in a manner subsequent generations often admired but seldom emulated. His life teaches lessons valuable to Scouts - and to others.
One point, though, ought to be clear. People who consider a statue of Abraham Lincoln an insult forfeit the standing to complain when individuals say Confederate memorials summon memories of repression and pain.

The only place a statue of Lincoln is considered an "insult" is on Southern soil. If you think it is correct and proper to erect a statue of that man on the sacred soil of the South, then let me submit that when a statue to Lee is erected in Central Park, then perhaps no complaint should be heard.....But...the sqawking of the Yankee horde would rend the heavens if THAT ever happened.........

Don't let it happen, start getting your chartered partner reps. from all the troops together to have them vote it down.
The BSA has becoming more PC in recent years. They push to have women and minorities on their national and local boards, on wood badge courses, and in all facets of scouting.
They have dumbed down the Scout Handbook and took out all the blood and guts of the program: stalking, animal tracks, star constellations, cooking with wood. Just look at a handbook from the 1960's and look at one today's. Most of the survival and paramilitary information is gone, starting a fire with 2 matches, etc. And those fairy like uniforms. Yuc, how international and PC can you get with that Purple (gay color) world brotherhood of Scouting patch embossed on all new uniforms, it's starting to look like the UN of Scouting. We here in the USA are much different than the rest of the worlds' programs.

It should but it doesn't in liberal PC circles, it's just a matter of time till we no longer teach our youth about those "evil men", the founding fathers(a term which is currently being exorcized from textbooks).I wonder how the PC cultists are going to get around explaining how these "evil men", the founding fathers, wrote the U.S. Constitution, the document which gives the PC cultists all of the freedoms and rights that they enjoy and that they wouldn't consider giving up for anything in the world.

... it was announced that the Council directors had voted to change its name from The Robert E. Lee Council, which has been in use for many decades, to something else. To what? The Rachel Corrie Council?

The revisionist evaluation of historical figures using contemporary standards is appalling - and far too many people lack sufficient historical knowledge to evaluate it to begin with.
Abraham Lincoln came to symbolize the Union, or the North. Yet, Lincoln was from Kentucky, way South and West of Virginia. Robert E. Lee, was from Northern Virginia. Which man had the Southern mindset? Which man was educated? Lincoln had one year of schooling. So, he became a lawyer. Lee graduated first in his class at West Point.
Robert E. Lee fought in the Mexican campaign, and the Civil War. Lincoln went into the field one afternoon. Having had his fill of war, Lincoln retired to political manipulation, which is what Southern politicians do best. But I digress. Robert E. Lee fought for Virginia and Virginians fought for him.
The revisionist evaluation of historical figures using contemporary standards, isn't just appalling, it's plain ludicrous. Who could fill Robert E. Lee's boots anyway -- around Richmond Virginia. What would the Boy Scout patches read? The Hillary Clinton district?

All of what you say is true but you left out the fact that Lincoln was self educated and was a very bright man in my estimation. He spent his adult life north of the Ohio river. His wife, Mary Todd, was from Lexington, Ky. and was very familiar with slavery being raise in the upper crust of Lexington.
Long live the memory of Lee, Washington, Jefferson and Lincoln. Being a "northerner" I had to put in Lincoln though I think he was on the wrong side of states rights vs. federalism.
