I'm sure your USMC link is more accurate than the article I found. Also, it appears my memory isn't as good as I thought, because I was quite sure Basilone died on Guadalcanal. Oh well, I'm glad we finally got it sorted out.

I knew four fellows who were in the Solomons and heard a few good stories. One of them was a Scout-Sniper with the 1st Division and you could see him get animated and the years roll away when he started talking about "killing Japs". He went all over the island on recon patrols. Another guy retired as a Sgt. Major and landed with the 2nd Division at the tail end of the campaign. His war stories tended to be the more funny stuff. He was on Iwo--with an amtrac company IIRC--later on and I was sure he mentioned Basilone being killed there. Maybe he'd met the guy, I don't know. I definitely know he didn't like Chesty Puller.

There will be a carrier named after Clinton, mark my word. The Roosevelt is nicknamed The Big Stick. What will the nickname of the USS 'Toon be?

during the vietnam war some of the old ww2 carriers were re-commissioned as communications ships, and parked out in the pacific.
this was, of course, before we had adequate numbers of satellites.

1 - Compare the management of our carrier fleet with the management of our shuttle fleet, and compare upgrades and replacements, and keeping them safe and sailing/flying.
