Good mooorning Situation Room Freepers. I didn't see the Pres. last night either so I'll be interested to hear if it's rerun today too.

Lots of interesting stuff about Iraq and AlQueda, as if a toddler couldn't figure that one out.

I'll be checking in and out. Thanks for the news posts.

Afterall all the documents of a government were wide open if messy for anyone who cared to look at them. Have we seen any such stories from US journalists?

This was posted yesterday, but is full of info (the tip of the blood money iceberg?) - Saddam bought the press, pols, business people (the country of Jordan?), etc...in a propaganda effort spanning over 2 decades: Saddam's Cash, Weekly Standard.

Some of the regime's records no longer exist. Iraqi officials destroyed some before the war began. Coalition bombs wiped out others. Looters made off with more. Still, Bush administration sources say they have recovered enough Iraqi government and Baath party documents to fill 100 semi-trailers. "We're overwhelmed with information," says one Pentagon official. "It's going to take a long time to go through it all."

That process is just now beginning--a fact that is surely rattling nerves around the world.

Tex, the link doesn't work. "Forever a Prisoner" sounds like a must-read (and a 'must-share').

V Corps shifting headquarters from Kuwait to Baghdad area

By David Josar, Stars and Stripes
European edition, Sunday, April 27, 2003

CAMP VIRGINIA, Kuwait — V Corps has begun shifting its main headquarters from Kuwait to just west of Baghdad, a move officials said demonstrates how the focus of the war with Iraq has changed.

“Now it’s the fun part of the mission,” said Col. David Brown, V Corps chief of operations. “We’re going to see kids smile. We’re going to let the Iraqis choose their own destiny.”

On Friday morning, about 70 Humvees and trucks packed with equipment and people began the roughly 400-mile trek to Baghdad, where V Corps will re-establish its headquarters. Although the plan may change, the unit hopes to settle into one of Saddam Hussein’s former palaces.

Overall, nearly 400 vehicles and 1,000 people will be part of the transition.

The V Corps headquarters component has been directing military operations throughout Iraq from Camp Virginia, west of Kuwait City. Troops have been here since the fall, participating in Operation Internal Look, a command and control exercise, and then Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Most troops arrived in January.

Being based in Iraq will give leaders a better feel for the next stage of the operation and what they have accomplished so far.

“Now we’re going to see the results of our work,” said Lt. Col. Dan McLean, deputy chief of operations. “What we do is not as physical as combat, but it’s exacting and important.”

For the past several days, V Corps troops have been breaking down camp. They have lowered tents, packed communications gear and rounded up razor wire. Nearly every Humvee in the convoy is pulling a trailer.

An advance team left earlier in the week to scout a new location.

“I’m ready for a change,” said Sgt. Dawn Keesee, part of the corps’ nuclear, biological and chemical detection unit. “The road to Baghdad also means one step closer to home.”

Her husband is in Heidelberg, Germany, home of V Corps.

Capt. Mike Bajema said the move will allow him to see the results of his work as an operations battle officer.

“I know what I’ve seen on TV. I don’t think Iraq will be like that,” he said, referring to scenes of looting. Bajema said he expects Baghdad to be 90 percent peaceful, but he is ready to see it with his own eyes.

Sgt. Sandra Sadiq, an administrative clerk, said she was anxious to experience the capital city of Iraq.

“This is history. I am going to be a part of that,” she said.

Soldiers went through a variety of briefings on Thursday, the day before the convoy moved out. They were told to start taking anti-malaria pills and admonished not to give food, water, candy or anything else to children or adults expected to line sections of the convoy route. Such actions could endanger or disrupt the convoy, they were told.

They were lectured to make sure their weapons are clean and their vehicles ready for the trip.

“Our goal is to get there safely,” Brown said. “This is not like driving back from Grafenwöhr [training range in Germany] to Heidelberg or Darmstadt.”

Brown said there was a chance the convoy could encounter snipers or paramilitary troops along the way. The route had been cleared of mines, he said.

He said the major fighting is over, but dangers still exist.

“This is still a combat operation and there are still people who don’t want us out there,” he told the troops before departure.

He said the scenes of looting and unrest are, in some ways, not unlike scenes in America following a local team’s success in a major sporting event.

He promised his troops that the journey would be the trip of a lifetime.

“This is a historic day — a day to see a free Iraq,” he told them. “Enjoy it.”

The night shift

Another misty morning, another night come and gone at Bashur Airfield in northeastern Iraq. Aerial porters with the 86th Air Mobility Squadron out of Ramstein Air Base, Germany, assemble to unload the last C-17 of the night shift. For the first week of the deployment, the only planes coming into Bashur arrived in the dead of night for security purposes. The overnight crew of aerial porters — the people who unload and load planes — worked solely with night-vision goggles to a degree unmatched in the history of combat. During that first week, the night shift handled 84 cargo flights without incident.

The day shift

Before the day shift passes the baton to the night shift, a joint meeting is called by Air Force Lt. Col. Mike Marra, commander of the 86th Air Mobility Squadron. Marra (lower lefthand corner, leaning against vehicle) and Master Sgt. Mario Ramos brief the squadron on a range of issues, from personnel moves to the latest news on when they might be headed home to Ramstein Air Base, Germany.

I was thinking about the Galloway story. When the Baghdad fell at least some British journalist started doing investigative reporting. Afterall all the documents of a government were wide open if messy for anyone who cared to look at them. Have we seen any such stories from US journalists?

Nope. The Truth doesn't fit the Agenda.

Afternoon nully!

I just heard that Tariq Aziz is talking and Franks in an interview told NBC's reporter that the info Aziz is providing is checking out.

Aziz told them something we didn't know and it seems to have checked out after we looked into it.

Afternoon, sheik. LoL! Helen at the Defense briefing! Sit her in the front row under Rummy's watchful eye. (^;

This briefing from Qatar is past my bedtime - April 28 at 8:45 a.m. Qatar time (1:45 a.m. EDT), but Helen's probably just lifting the coffin lid. I haven't checked to see whether it will be carried on any TV channels.

As if we didn't have enough reasons to be angry with the French (press evildoers alert):

The French Spin a Different War Story

....Most striking in the French coverage was the total absence of any criticism of government policy, or of President Jacques Chirac - a president who squeaked past voters in the first round of last year's elections with a little more than 18 percent of the vote, neck and neck with extreme-right leader Jean-Marie LePen. In normal times the opposition Socialist Party would have been all over Chirac, and France's lively opinion journals would have skewered his policies from all sides. But the French war coverage was not merely one-sided, it was viciously inaccurate and openly anti-American. Propaganda is too polite a term for the type of deliberate brainwashing conducted by the official state media. This reporter has seen nothing like it in 18 years of covering France.

I just read the article you posted "Forever a Prisoner"..and it is bad enough UDay had this woman tortured over and over. But her own sisters forsaking her is heartbreaking. I can just imagine how much she wants UDay to have to look her in the eyes now and see she has survived. What a brave soul. She is probably just the tip of the iceberg.

See *58: "AL-ZUBAIDI" DETAINED IN BAGHDAD - the Mayor/Governor of Baghdad went a wee bit far - the basics:

Al-Zubaidi was detained and then removed from Baghdad to prevent his continued misrepresentation of his authority as the mayor of Baghdad in the aftermath of the regime’s defeat. Specifically, Al Zubaidi sent letters to individuals and organizations telling them not to go back to work at utility plants (power, water, sewage) and banks, unless he approved it. Without authority, he purported to fire legitimate, licensed and competent power company employees and in their steed placed his deputy Ubaidi in charge of power. He then appointed other persons to operate water, power, and sewage and bank facilities in Baghdad. Al Zubaidi and Al Ubaidi attempted to exercise authority in the region not representative of the interests of the people in Baghdad while obstructing the normal means of governance for their own self-interests.

No decision has been made on the next step to ensure he does not interfere with the restoration of Iraq.

Elements of the 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division took Al-Zubaidi and approximately seven other members of his organization into custody. Five have been released with the remainder being held at an internment facility in Iraq.

There were no injuries and no exchange of gunfire.

(O.K., it's time to take away Bubba's telephone. Enough's enough.)
