The FairTax is a single rate of 23 percent inclusive on all retail purchases, which would replace all personal and corporate income taxes, payroll taxes and death taxes. It eliminates all loopholes, which would generate more revenue to fund our government.Try 12% and cut the dang size and scope of government. What is this obsession with making sure that they have more and more of our money when we are struggling to simply stay even?!?

Try 12% and cut the dang size and scope of government.I'm with you and getting the FairTax enacted is the FIRST step in that direction!
Current law (PAGO) requires that any proposed replacement tax system be revenue neutral in it's 1st year and 23% is what it takes to get there!

I am all for doing something about the tax structure as it stands but...
Who is going to collect this tax
Will they be bonded
Who pays for the bond
Will this apply to equipment purchases for businesses
Will this discourage equipment investment
Will this discourage purchases of all things
Will that slow the economy

FYI. Mr. Cain used to live in Omaha and is still the President and CEO of Godfather's pizza. He considered running for president in 2000, but opted out. Used to enjoy seeing him at sporting events as he was usually there to sing the national anthem.
GOP rising star.

Herman Cain is the former CEO of Godfather's Pizza. He used to live right here in River City. I'm proud to see he's supporting the NRST.
Good to see you, old friend.

Even better, Pass an ammendment to the Constitution that says any law, regulation, or statute that is not understandable by the average high school graduate (try Washington DC)the law, regulation or statute is null and void. Give congress a couple of years to rewrite everything, Withhold their pay until the job is done.
I think Oregon based a law mandating insurance companies to write their policies in simple english.

"...it may finally be time to replace the income tax with a consumption tax." There is one hugh flaw with this remark.
If the 16th amendment is not repealed simultaneously with the enactment of a consumption tax, then it will only be a matter of time when we will have both a consumption tax and an income tax.
Of course, it will be for the children.

I hate to tell you this but there is NOTHING whatever preventing that right now but when H.R.25 is enacted INCOME taxes become illegal by statute, the IRS is defunded, and all IRS records are required to be destroyed.
Seems to me the 16th would no longer have a point and could easily be repealed with that in place.

I converted my IRA in 1998 to a Roth IRA, and paid the income taxes on it.
I guess if a national sales tax goes into effect, I am screwed again: 1st I paid income taxes on the IRA, then I will pay sales taxes on any amount I spend.
I therefore have a couple thousand reasons why I am against the national sales tax.
