Report: Marines wounded in fighting late Wednesday in Iraq

The Associated Press

DURHAM, N.C. (AP) - At least 25 Marines from Camp Lejeune were injured during house-to-house fighting that began Wednesday night in An Nasiriyah, according to a WTVD-TV reporter traveling with the troops. Keith Garvin, reporting live Wednesday evening - about 2 a.m. in Baghdad - said the Marines were wounded over the past few hours in combat that had picked up "quite a bit in the last 10 minutes or so." He reported late Wednesday night that none of the injuries appeared to be life-threatening.

Civilians living behind a Marine camp at An Nasiriyah were seen setting up bunkers in the afternoon, and military officials "said they had heard or felt that something bad was going to happen tonight," Garvin reported.

Intelligence reports indicated 2,000 Iraqi troops were advancing on the camp, and a two-hour fight with missiles and artillery ensued, ultimately augmented by aerial bombing, he said.

Garvin said some of the Iraqi fighters were using women as shields and had given guns to children.

"Unfortunately some of the children have been firing at our Marines and our Marines have been forced to defend themselves," he said.

The wounded appeared to be in addition to 15 Lejeune Marines who have been reported injured during the Iraqi conflict. Eleven Lejeune Marines have died, nine in combat in the An Nasiriyah area and two in accidents.

I agree. There is nothing more despicable than enlisting children for this type of thing. The biggest victims of this though will be those coalition soldiers that are forced to kill them. Theirs will be the worst psychological trauma of all. and that is Saddam's real intent.

The marines will need support. However, cultures are different. In many societies 12-13 year old boys are considered men.

Yes, we need to pray for those soldiers and marines who will have to shoot these young kids. It's going to be very hard on them.

nothing new...did the same thing in Mogadishu...we had a serious ROE discussion concerning kids who tried to throw molotov cocktails...when do you shoot? As he throws the bottle, or when he lights the rag, etc...

Too bad this isn't like the old western movies; they could shoot the bottle out of the kid's hand.

Sorry - don't agree with you. We are hamstringing America by allowing propaganda to determine our every action.

This is terrorism also. Do we appease the naysayers? Are they then content or do they just seek the next battle for us to appease, the next battle? Why should they stop - it works.

They know full well what they are doing and logic, appeasement and doing all they tell us will never work as it does not work with terrorism.

Sad that many may believe them - but, propaganda will always be a part of life - so we must go on and live life as we feel it should be done.

Same told germans who invaded Russia.

Not sure I understand what you are trying to say. Are you referring to the Hitler Youth that were thrown into the last ditch defense of Berlin, or something else?

No I meant 1941 Operation Barbarossa.

I am pretty familiar with Operation Barbarossa, but I was not aware of children being pressed into battle on either side during that phase of the war.

There was children who live in forest with thier parents. When parents begin to fight so are they.

In the case of Partisan activity where they are willingly defending their homeland, and not pressed into service at gun-point or drafted, I have no problem with that as long as they are not too young. During our own American Revolution boys as young as 10 took up arms against the British.

My comment was in direct reference to Saddam's thugs going around and forcing them, under penalty of death to their families to fight.

I don't remember many folks here (though many liberals did) denouncing Gibson for proudly using children warriors to illustrate that glories of the American revolution in the Patriot.
