Don't forget to boycott German, Mexican and Canadian goods as well!

Add China to that list.

We're burning our last bag of Canadian made stove pellets today. Did some phone shopping and found American (TN) hardwood pellets for less than the Canadian bags!

No more trips to Montreal either.

I am not big on wine... but while stationed in Germany, (barring maybe the icewine) Italian wines always put French and German wine to shame in my book. Bar none.

Please give Fess Parker wines a try.

I met old Fess 2 years ago, my mom sees him a couple times a year, and he asks how I am. He is a real gentleman, a kindly soul, and a good winemaker. Plus he can grin down a bear.

French wine isn't all that wonderful anyway. I have to say that Spanish rioja wines have been really coming along lately; I bought a couple of bottles of it the other day, myself.

Spanish wine is really coming around. I've had some very acceptable bottles and have started drinking it over the last year or so. The Italians have also started to produce some very good bottles over the last ten years or so, though you have to know what bottle you are getting into.

Even if the French are venal and unprincipled bastards, they can produce very good wines. In terms of value though, you there is only a very narrow range of French wines that are worth the money. Those are the 2nd tier bottlings of the ultra-premium vineyards, which you can get in the US for about $20-30. Essentially as good as the 1st tier bottles, but without the few hundred dollar price tag. These bottles are very competitive quality-wise with the California wines for the dollar, which incidentally are excellent these days, both the 1999 and 2001 (2000 sucks).

California wines have become so cheap in the US these days, due to the wine glut, that generally we just drink Californian.

Italian wines have their own character, one which I happen to appreciate. The closest thing to Italian reds, character-wise, is Australian, but it isn't the same and you can taste the difference. The Germans only produce one wine that is arguably incomparable to anything else, and that is Riesling. The only thing the French really have going for them is their Bordeaux reds, which are unique and often superb but not particularly great values. Forget Burgundy; the Pinots coming from Oregon are excellent and a much better value for the money. The Pacific Northwest is a rapidly rising star in the world of Pinot, and while some people are making equivalent bottles in France, nobody is making a better bottle.

heh, they could take a clue from the Swiss... the makers of useful knives, fun clocks, and one quality cheese over the French, who are masters of: a kind of cheese for every day of the year, and finely aged whine
